00;00;09;07 – 00;00;12;05
Jon
Dude I like your poster, “grind”? What’s it say underneath?

00;00;12;25 – 00;00;14;00
Chad
It’s just the definition.

00;00;14;18 – 00;00;14;25
Jon
Yeah.

00;00;15;25 – 00;00;17;04
Chad
So I actually have.

00;00;17;04 – 00;00;17;18
Chad
three of.

00;00;17;18 – 00;00;19;26
Chad
Them up on the wall. You know? one of them, though.

00;00;20;09 – 00;00;21;11
Jon
But where did the other two.

00;00;21;26 – 00;00;23;10
Chad
Hustle and execution?

00;00;24;03 – 00;00;25;06
Jon
Right? Sick.

00;00;26;01 – 00;00;43;03
Chad
But it’s just something I got to look at. You know, I’m in sales, so I’m traditionally on Zoom all the time, especially through COVID. And you know, I need things that are going to help keep me motivated throughout the day, throughout the week and to continue grinding.

00;00;43;10 – 00;00;43;19
Chad
Right?

00;00;44;10 – 00;01;00;02
Jon
Hmm. So what’s that old cliche say? Does excellence is not an event. It’s a habit. So what my favorite poster? I got a poster in my gym. It says comfort is a slow death. Prefer pain.

00;01;03;03 – 00;01;04;04
Chad
It’s so true, though.

00;01;04;05 – 00;01;04;18
Chad
You know.

00;01;04;18 – 00;01;07;21
Jon
It is. It is. It absolutely.

00;01;07;21 – 00;01;08;00
Speaker 5
Is.

00;01;08;12 – 00;01;15;00
Jon
So yesterday, man, we were talking about, we jumped on the phone and stuff as I was sitting around the roads in an ice.

00;01;15;00 – 00;01;15;11
Speaker 5
Storm.

00;01;16;02 – 00;01;33;18
Jon
And we were talking about essentially the importance of. Decisions in how one simple decision can alter an entire life. So I figure just to get to the gears moving as we kaugnay and get after it today, we could just dove into that if you want.

00;01;34;16 – 00;01;35;06
Jon
Absolutely.

00;01;35;19 – 00;01;36;21
Jon
See what comes from that?

00;01;39;21 – 00;01;46;28
Chad
Yes, so my son, Emmett, he’s he’s eight, and we got him in this.

00;01;46;28 – 00;01;58;01
Chad
In this wrestling program over near our house. And I never wrestle as a kid, so I don’t really understand, you know, the real understand the concept of wrestling.

00;01;58;01 – 00;02;06;17
Chad
But when you really get in the nitty gritty of it, I don’t really get it right. So we jumped in with both feet and he’s got practice twice a week.

00;02;06;18 – 00;02;08;15
Chad
He has tournaments every so.

00;02;08;15 – 00;02;14;22
Chad
Often on the weekends on Sunday. And so he gets involved.

00;02;14;22 – 00;02;20;21
Chad
In this program, right? And it’s incredible for me to watch, right? Because our competitive nature. Right.

00;02;21;17 – 00;02;26;25
Chad
You always want to push, push, push, push. And he’s right. So I’m living this kind of.

00;02;27;07 – 00;02;31;23
Chad
Through his eyes for the very first time. And it’s incredible to see, right?

00;02;31;25 – 00;02;33;15
Chad
So you’re watching these kids doing.

00;02;33;15 – 00;02;34;10
Chad
Wind sprints.

00;02;34;22 – 00;02;37;17
Chad
And pushups and sit up so you’re not listening. Get on.

00;02;37;17 – 00;02;38;25
Chad
The line. We’re running, right?

00;02;39;02 – 00;02;40;26
Chad
And I just got the biggest grin on my.

00;02;40;26 – 00;02;43;08
Chad
Face for for an hour and a half.

00;02;43;08 – 00;02;44;13
Chad
As I’m watching these kids.

00;02;44;13 – 00;02;45;14
Chad
Suffer. Right?

00;02;45;27 – 00;02;46;11
Jon
Yes.

00;02;47;24 – 00;02;52;06
Chad
Right. Because I personally suffered my entire life through a form.

00;02;52;06 – 00;02;53;05
Chad
Of athletics, right?

00;02;53;06 – 00;02;57;14
Chad
Just not wrestling. So after every practice.

00;02;57;14 – 00;03;00;05
Chad
He’s coming back like, dad, you don’t get it. You know, like, we.

00;03;00;05 – 00;03;02;00
Chad
Just ran for an hour and a.

00;03;02;00 – 00;03;09;06
Chad
Half and I’m so tired and I don’t want to do this anymore. And I’m like, Son, it’s going to be OK, you know?

00;03;09;06 – 00;03;10;09
Chad
And an hour later, he’s.

00;03;10;09 – 00;03;13;12
Chad
Like, Dad, let’s practice this move in the living room, you know?

00;03;14;05 – 00;03;16;26
Chad
And so he’s super pumped about wrestling, right?

00;03;16;26 – 00;03;17;11
Chad
Which I’m.

00;03;17;11 – 00;03;18;02
Chad
Super pumped.

00;03;18;02 – 00;03;19;14
Chad
About, right? Because I’m living through this.

00;03;19;14 – 00;03;19;26
Chad
For the first.

00;03;19;26 – 00;03;26;13
Chad
Time. And so he’s been to eat. We’ve technically been to three matches now, but.

00;03;26;13 – 00;03;27;00
Chad
The first two.

00;03;27;00 – 00;03;28;09
Chad
Matches, he took second.

00;03;28;09 – 00;03;29;21
Chad
Place in the first place, right?

00;03;29;21 – 00;03;31;14
Chad
So he’s just used his.

00;03;31;14 – 00;03;32;15
Chad
Sheer strength.

00;03;32;28 – 00;03;34;11
Chad
And ability to kind of.

00;03;34;11 – 00;03;35;08
Chad
Figure it out.

00;03;35;22 – 00;03;40;14
Jon
In real quick on that because I’ve got to share some context because I’m just grinning over here.

00;03;40;25 – 00;03;41;00
Speaker 5
Because.

00;03;41;00 – 00;03;57;09
Jon
I have memories that no one else here has. But I used to call you affectionately the white gorilla because. And you got me into being really dedicated about squatting and deadlifting and doing weighted lunges and just really going insane for strength, and I appreciate that God, man.

00;03;57;22 – 00;03;58;25
Jon
I was like eight years ago now.

00;03;59;12 – 00;03;59;28
Speaker 5
Holy crap.

00;04;00;13 – 00;04;18;14
Jon
But the reason I bring this up is because you would. Put a chain belt on. With I’m not even sure if you remember doing this like three or four plates were working out one day you for like three or four plates between your legs with this chain belt and we were doing dips and you’re not a little

00;04;18;14 – 00;04;24;15
Jon
guy either. So like you’re you’re like well over £350, easily probably pushing for doing these dips.

00;04;25;00 – 00;04;25;06
Speaker 5
And.

00;04;25;06 – 00;04;42;19
Jon
You just start cranking out like 123. Like, no problem. You’re not even fazed. I’m just like demoralized and pissed off and want to do more because of it. And the bar that you’re doing, the dips on starts bending downwards because it wasn’t meant for that to work and you got angry at the bar and started cursing at

00;04;42;19 – 00;04;55;12
Jon
the bar mid set and you didn’t stop. You continued, You finished your reps with the bar like bed down like 15 degrees more than it should have. And you got off easy. Just curse that you just dropped about.

00;04;55;12 – 00;05;08;08
Jon
You just like, walk off. It’s like, OK, we’re not even going to clean up after this, because how dare this gym give us inferior equipment that can’t withstand what I needed to do? So that’s just a taste of the insanity that we did together.

00;05;08;17 – 00;05;20;10
Jon
And I know you live and die by pursuing that type of just hard core push yourself mentality. And I do the same, but I remembered that and I thought, you’d like to stroll down memory lane.

00;05;21;10 – 00;05;23;12
Chad
Well, and just to add a little context.

00;05;23;27 – 00;05;25;27
Chad
When we were out there together, you know.

00;05;26;05 – 00;05;26;26
Jon
In OK.

00;05;27;24 – 00;05;28;19
Chad
You were the guy.

00;05;28;19 – 00;05;29;06
Chad
That was.

00;05;29;06 – 00;05;32;00
Chad
Literally sprinting as we were running.

00;05;32;00 – 00;05;36;22
Chad
Long distance and I’m thinking like, Oh man, I got to sync up with this guy because if we.

00;05;37;07 – 00;05;39;01
Chad
Bring our powers together, you.

00;05;39;01 – 00;05;43;14
Chad
Know, it’s going to be unstoppable. So don’t think that you didn’t help me.

00;05;43;14 – 00;05;45;07
Chad
In terms of that front as well.

00;05;45;17 – 00;05;48;11
Chad
As I’m carrying you on my back.

00;05;48;21 – 00;05;49;19
Chad
And we’re running.

00;05;49;19 – 00;05;51;03
Chad
Long distances and then we.

00;05;51;03 – 00;05;52;20
Chad
Switch and you’re carrying me.

00;05;53;20 – 00;06;05;07
Jon
Which was, by the way, not a fair trade because you had an easy £50 on me. So I appreciated it because I like I’m a masochist. I like pain. But it was like, This is not an equal trade.

00;06;05;12 – 00;06;13;19
Jon
I do. I’m glad you brought that up, though, and it’s a real quick deviation before we get back to to end it using his strength, which he came by honestly to kind of win.

00;06;14;01 – 00;06;14;09
Speaker 5
Up.

00;06;14;10 – 00;06;34;08
Jon
And up until the point of what you’re sharing. But I remember because we, you know, we were both like really junior in our military careers. We’re getting into a system in like in most groups, right, there is going to be kind of the leader, right, the natural leader who who evolves and becomes the person who everyone looks

00;06;34;08 – 00;06;50;23
Jon
to. And typically, if there’s two strong individuals, what happens is rivalry is created, right? But we I remember we had very intentional conversation. We we realized that there was a rivalry between you and I, but it wasn’t in the form of competition to beat one another.

00;06;50;24 – 00;07;03;13
Jon
It was more of a worthy rival. Like, we found something that was like, OK, you’re stronger. I’m weak, I’m stronger, you’re weak. If we partner out, no one’s going to be able to stop us, and we’re both strength each other holistically.

00;07;03;26 – 00;07;14;23
Jon
And like I remember that conversation, that’s how we spent those months together is awesome. I just think it’s a different perspective. That is, it talked about often. So I’m glad you brought that up.

00;07;16;06 – 00;07;17;21
Chad
And just to add to that thought.

00;07;18;07 – 00;07;22;09
Chad
Having you and your family out there made a world of difference.

00;07;22;09 – 00;07;24;25
Chad
For me because when we would come out.

00;07;24;25 – 00;07;27;28
Chad
From whatever we were doing, studying or we were out in the field or whatever.

00;07;28;08 – 00;07;32;23
Chad
And I would come over there and felt like a second family. So I do want to give.

00;07;32;23 – 00;07;33;08
Chad
Praises.

00;07;33;08 – 00;07;45;08
Chad
To to you and especially Lindsey and the boys, because it felt a little bit natural. For me, when it doesn’t usually do so when when a.

00;07;45;08 – 00;07;45;24
Chad
Majority of.

00;07;45;24 – 00;07;47;10
Chad
People are going back to a hotel.

00;07;47;26 – 00;07;48;19
Chad
And we were out there for.

00;07;48;29 – 00;07;50;14
Chad
Literally six months, so.

00;07;55;13 – 00;08;10;12
Jon
Lindsay’s amazing and just two to tie together in case people are guessing like what? What the heck and who are you? And things like that since you’re in a good flow here. So your Chad O’Donnell, you’re an artillery officer now in the guard?

00;08;11;21 – 00;08;14;24
Jon
Yep, National Guard. You’re also in technology sales.

00;08;15;26 – 00;08;16;03
Speaker 5
Yep.

00;08;17;16 – 00;08;31;16
Jon
You’ve undergone an injury over the last couple of years, which we’ll probably talk about. And you and I know each other because we cut our teeth together through our officer, basic training staff at Fort Sill Oklahoma with all the glory that that was.

00;08;32;00 – 00;08;32;17
Speaker 5
And.

00;08;32;17 – 00;08;43;29
Jon
Have maintained contact sets and enjoy each other’s company and mindsets. And that’s why we’re here today. So I’d leave anything out, man, that was like a good 32nd shock blast.

00;08;44;18 – 00;08;47;15
Chad
Yeah, I know that was pretty much the gist of it.

00;08;48;16 – 00;09;01;10
Jon
Cool. So before I jumped in, you’re talking about how it is throwing around and it being your son is throwing around kids in the first couple of tournaments just because he’s built like his father and is therefore a stud.

00;09;01;10 – 00;09;01;21
Speaker 5
Ox.

00;09;02;11 – 00;09;09;11
Jon
And has strength. And that’s leading up to a competition the most recent one, correct most recent tournament.

00;09;09;24 – 00;09;10;02
Jon
OK.

00;09;11;20 – 00;09;14;25
Chad
So this was last weekend. We go into this.

00;09;14;25 – 00;09;17;24
Chad
In this fairly large tournament, I would say a regional.

00;09;18;13 – 00;09;19;10
Chad
Put on by the state.

00;09;19;10 – 00;09;20;15
Chad
Of California, which.

00;09;21;15 – 00;09;24;02
Chad
Give a little more context. I live in the state of California.

00;09;25;03 – 00;09;27;26
Chad
So adversity in terms of weather.

00;09;29;01 – 00;09;30;02
Chad
Isn’t necessarily.

00;09;30;02 – 00;09;31;05
Chad
There for my son.

00;09;33;02 – 00;09;36;05
Chad
And so if it’s about 70 and he’s not.

00;09;36;05 – 00;09;37;08
Chad
Wearing shorts and a.

00;09;37;08 – 00;09;43;19
Chad
Form of flip flops, there’s a problem because he’s cold. And so we can dig into that.

00;09;43;19 – 00;09;45;01
Chad
A little bit later. But adversity.

00;09;45;01 – 00;09;45;27
Chad
Is an issue.

00;09;46;19 – 00;09;48;16
Chad
For a majority of people that live down here in.

00;09;48;16 – 00;09;50;14
Chad
Southern California. Would you say that to say the least.

00;09;50;23 – 00;09;52;12
Jon
As in, there’s a lack of it.

00;09;52;29 – 00;09;55;05
Chad
There is a lack of it. Absolutely.

00;09;55;14 – 00;09;56;25
Jon
It’s a comfortable place to live.

00;09;57;05 – 00;09;57;25
Chad
It is a very.

00;09;57;25 – 00;10;08;07
Chad
Comfortable place to live. So we go up to say we go up to San Clemente, where this last tournament was at with Emmet and we go in.

00;10;08;07 – 00;10;09;06
Chad
There and there is a.

00;10;09;09 – 00;10;10;17
Chad
Ton of kids.

00;10;10;24 – 00;10;12;16
Chad
Normally we’re in this very.

00;10;13;21 – 00;10;14;01
Chad
Much.

00;10;14;01 – 00;10;21;06
Chad
Smaller tournament like a local tournament, and that’s where he took first and second, right? So now we’re in kind of a regional tournament.

00;10;22;00 – 00;10;28;03
Chad
A lot more kids, a lot more skill and he’s looking at me like, you got to be kidding me. Like, this is only.

00;10;28;03 – 00;10;29;24
Chad
My third tournament, what’s going on here?

00;10;29;24 – 00;10;34;00
Chad
So he goes into his.

00;10;34;00 – 00;10;34;09
Chad
first.

00;10;34;09 – 00;10;40;18
Chad
Match and he beats the kid. This kid is actually extremely good. You could tell that he he had a lot of technique.

00;10;40;18 – 00;10;41;14
Chad
And he’s been wrestling for a.

00;10;41;14 – 00;10;46;20
Chad
Long time and it just happened to man handle him. He just got lucky and he used.

00;10;46;20 – 00;10;47;21
Chad
His sheer strength.

00;10;48;05 – 00;10;53;20
Chad
To take this kid out and he comes off the mat and he won right.

00;10;53;21 – 00;10;55;10
Chad
He won eleven to three. He didn’t pin.

00;10;55;10 – 00;11;09;08
Chad
The kid, but he won eleven to three. And so he comes off the mat and he’s looking at me like, Oh, my finger hurts. Like, I don’t know if I can continue doing this, and I could tell just because I’m a competitor of an athlete my entire life, I could tell he was.

00;11;09;08 – 00;11;09;25
Chad
Tired.

00;11;10;21 – 00;11;21;02
Chad
And he was like, Oh, this took it all out of me. I don’t know if I have anything left. I might just sit down, drink. Some water is going to be fine. And he’s like holding his finger. I’m like, Dude, come on now.

00;11;21;07 – 00;11;22;05
Chad
Been there, done that.

00;11;22;05 – 00;11;22;19
Chad
Bought that.

00;11;22;19 – 00;11;23;04
Chad
T-shirt.

00;11;23;16 – 00;11;28;20
Chad
Twice. So he’s sitting down and it’s like, All right, you.

00;11;28;20 – 00;11;30;01
Chad
Know this adversity starting to.

00;11;30;02 – 00;11;31;20
Chad
Kick in a little bit. He’s never had.

00;11;31;20 – 00;11;32;13
Chad
Adversity in.

00;11;32;13 – 00;11;38;23
Chad
Wrestling thus far, right? Because he’s just mop the floor with everybody. Some, like sour.

00;11;38;23 – 00;11;39;09
Jon
Taste.

00;11;39;25 – 00;11;50;26
Chad
Is getting a taste. Sit down, you’ll be fine. So I’m like, we’re watching everyone else and end to give a little more context. Both my dad and Kate’s dad.

00;11;51;19 – 00;11;54;02
Chad
Emmett’s moms are both grandparents were there.

00;11;54;02 – 00;11;54;26
Chad
In the stands.

00;11;56;00 – 00;11;58;12
Chad
And Kate’s dad wrestled at the.

00;11;58;12 – 00;11;59;24
Chad
Naval Academy, so he’s.

00;11;59;24 – 00;12;01;08
Chad
Got a little wrestling background.

00;12;01;20 – 00;12;03;17
Chad
I don’t. My dad doesn’t.

00;12;04;01 – 00;12;05;02
Chad
But we’re all just wrestling.

00;12;05;02 – 00;12;07;12
Chad
We’re all we’ve all been athletes, our entire lives.

00;12;07;24 – 00;12;09;19
Chad
And we’re watching this and we’re extremely proud.

00;12;10;07 – 00;12;10;12
Chad
That.

00;12;10;14 – 00;12;11;18
Chad
That proud sense.

00;12;11;18 – 00;12;12;07
Chad
And in a.

00;12;12;07 – 00;12;12;27
Chad
Father.

00;12;13;05 – 00;12;16;23
Chad
Watching their son just compete, especially mano a mano. You know what I mean? Yeah.

00;12;17;16 – 00;12;19;11
Chad
So we go to the third match.

00;12;20;15 – 00;12;22;01
Chad
And it goes on the.

00;12;22;01 – 00;12;24;15
Chad
Mat, he’s ready to go. He’s fired up, right?

00;12;24;17 – 00;12;41;04
Chad
And they go into it, and Emmett continues to mock this kid. Mop, mop him up. And something happened where they get tied up and something felt funny. And he went and put his arm out, and it went to put his arm out.

00;12;41;04 – 00;12;44;01
Chad
As they’re rolling to the ground, put his arm out.

00;12;45;13 – 00;12;47;19
Chad
And then he all of a sudden went to his back.

00;12;48;07 – 00;12;50;16
Chad
And he starts grabbing his arm and screaming.

00;12;51;22 – 00;13;01;24
Chad
Like screaming at the top of his lungs right in this big auditorium. And I’m like, Oh, no, you know, I’m like right on the edge of the mat, like, come on.

00;13;01;25 – 00;13;02;10
Jon
Oh.

00;13;02;25 – 00;13;12;19
Chad
And he’s just screaming, right? Not doing a thing, just sitting there. So he gets pinned and he kind of gets up holding his arm. And I’m like, looking back at.

00;13;12;19 – 00;13;13;20
Chad
The grandparents, like, what.

00;13;13;20 – 00;13;27;18
Chad
The hell’s going on? You know, I yeah, I didn’t notice it. I’m videotaping for my wife who’s not there. I’m trying to watch him at the same time sitting by his coach. And we had no idea what happened at the time.

00;13;28;15 – 00;13;40;15
Chad
He comes off, he’s screaming. He’s like, Dad, I want to go home. I can’t do this anymore. I’m hurt. I’m hurt. I’m hurt, I’m hurt. And I just sit down, drink some water because I didn’t see it at the time.

00;13;41;11 – 00;13;52;18
Chad
And he’s just screaming, crying. I’m like, What the heck is going on, you know, because I didn’t see it? Right? I didn’t see what happened. Some rub in his arm. I’m like, You’re OK. You probably just pulled a muscle.

00;13;52;27 – 00;13;53;15
Chad
You’re going to be OK.

00;13;53;16 – 00;13;55;11
Chad
There’s no bruise, no inflation.

00;13;55;18 – 00;13;58;03
Chad
There’s no you couldn’t see it visually.

00;13;58;13 – 00;13;59;07
Jon
On his arm.

00;14;00;11 – 00;14;04;20
Chad
And so they come over to me, the.

00;14;05;00 – 00;14;06;23
Chad
Scores come over to me like, Hey, you ready?

00;14;06;24 – 00;14;08;01
Chad
He’s up next. Right?

00;14;08;01 – 00;14;10;05
Chad
Because this is a bracket style wrestling tournament.

00;14;10;09 – 00;14;10;22
Jon
Mm-Hmm.

00;14;11;09 – 00;14;21;00
Chad
And he’s like, Yeah, he’ll be fine. You know, and he’s still balling. And I’m like, Suck it up, you know, suck it. You stop crying. Stop crying. You turn it into anger.

00;14;21;02 – 00;14;21;13
Chad
Right?

00;14;22;00 – 00;14;33;20
Chad
I’m trying to find something to get away from the pain. And he’s just looking at me like, I can’t do this. You know, his eyes are big. He’s just tearing up. It was just a mess, right? And the both.

00;14;33;20 – 00;14;35;10
Chad
Parents are both grandparents are.

00;14;35;10 – 00;14;42;27
Chad
Looking at me like, Do I go down there like, this doesn’t look good? Maybe. And they’re like, Oh, this, let’s deal with it, right?

00;14;43;12 – 00;14;43;23
Jon
Yeah.

00;14;44;25 – 00;14;46;18
Chad
And so I’m caught in this.

00;14;46;18 – 00;14;46;28
Chad
Like.

00;14;46;28 – 00;14;50;00
Chad
Predicament of, you know, do I.

00;14;50;13 – 00;14;51;28
Chad
Push him out there in the next.

00;14;51;28 – 00;14;54;14
Chad
Match and potentially.

00;14;54;14 – 00;14;55;28
Chad
Ruin this experience of.

00;14;55;28 – 00;14;56;16
Chad
This, of.

00;14;56;16 – 00;14;58;02
Chad
This journey that he started.

00;14;58;02 – 00;14;58;21
Chad
Into this new.

00;14;58;21 – 00;14;59;07
Chad
Sport?

00;15;00;11 – 00;15;01;15
Jon
Or the.

00;15;01;15 – 00;15;01;23
Chad
Word.

00;15;01;23 – 00;15;06;02
Chad
Quit pops up at my head, I’m like, this isn’t going to happen, like.

00;15;06;11 – 00;15;08;16
Chad
You’re going out there, whether you like it or not.

00;15;08;16 – 00;15;09;18
Chad
And you can fall.

00;15;09;18 – 00;15;10;26
Chad
On the floor and embarrass.

00;15;10;26 – 00;15;13;02
Chad
Yourself and get tapped out or.

00;15;13;02 – 00;15;13;11
Jon
Whatever.

00;15;14;25 – 00;15;20;04
Chad
So the guy comes back over me. I’m like, All right, just give him another. Have someone else go.

00;15;20;14 – 00;15;21;15
Chad
He’s almost ready.

00;15;22;18 – 00;15;28;09
Chad
And he’s still balling his ball on his ball and something kind of set into me like, Hey.

00;15;28;13 – 00;15;29;10
Chad
You know, you’re at this.

00;15;29;10 – 00;15;34;24
Chad
Turning point where, you know, if something did happen, there could be a big.

00;15;34;25 – 00;15;36;05
Chad
Bigger issue here, like.

00;15;36;05 – 00;15;43;23
Chad
Something could affect him long term. So I go up to the table and I’m like, you know what, it’s it’s done, it’s over with.

00;15;44;17 – 00;15;45;27
Chad
And we’re going to pull.

00;15;45;27 – 00;16;00;04
Chad
Him from the from the event and in my am I doing the walk of shame as I’m walking back to him like I just had my son quit, you know? Mm-Hmm. And so I’m upset, right? Because I didn’t see what happened up to this point.

00;16;01;12 – 00;16;03;20
Chad
So I got his bag, and he’s like holding.

00;16;03;20 – 00;16;04;20
Chad
This arm as he’s.

00;16;04;20 – 00;16;05;16
Chad
Walking back to the.

00;16;05;16 – 00;16;07;04
Chad
Car and both grandparents, they didn’t.

00;16;07;04 – 00;16;16;08
Chad
See anything. They’re like, You know, this is the walk of shame, you know, and we’re totally like. Almost dissing on the kid, you know, because.

00;16;16;21 – 00;16;17;18
Chad
This word quit.

00;16;17;18 – 00;16;18;06
Chad
Comes up.

00;16;18;06 – 00;16;18;16
Chad
Right?

00;16;19;21 – 00;16;20;06
Jon
And so.

00;16;20;26 – 00;16;22;00
Chad
We have a long drive.

00;16;22;00 – 00;16;24;15
Chad
Home back back home, and I’m talking to.

00;16;24;15 – 00;16;25;12
Chad
one of the grandparents.

00;16;25;12 – 00;16;27;27
Chad
That’s in the car and my son is sleeping in the.

00;16;27;27 – 00;16;28;24
Chad
Backseat of my truck.

00;16;29;27 – 00;16;32;20
Chad
And I’m like, Ernie, what do you think? You know, Ernie, the one.

00;16;32;20 – 00;16;33;03
Chad
That wrestled.

00;16;33;03 – 00;16;47;28
Chad
The Naval Academy, and he’s like, I don’t know, you know, like, I don’t know. So I pull up the video. I’m like, I got to see what went wrong here. And in slo mo, you see his arm like completely hyper.

00;16;47;29 – 00;16;49;14
Chad
Send in the wrong direction.

00;16;49;14 – 00;16;49;22
Chad
As he.

00;16;49;22 – 00;16;51;11
Chad
Went backwards. Mm hmm.

00;16;51;27 – 00;16;54;16
Chad
Complete like something out of one of those shows.

00;16;54;20 – 00;16;55;26
Chad
Like those ridiculous.

00;16;55;26 – 00;16;57;04
Chad
Shows that show like.

00;16;57;09 – 00;16;58;00
Chad
Injuries that.

00;16;58;00 – 00;16;58;13
Chad
Happen.

00;16;59;12 – 00;16;59;27
Speaker 5
And.

00;17;00;11 – 00;17;05;29
Chad
It. You pause it. You’re like, Oh, no, did that really just happen? And right.

00;17;06;00 – 00;17;06;11
Chad
After.

00;17;06;11 – 00;17;06;26
Chad
That is.

00;17;06;27 – 00;17;07;08
Chad
Right when.

00;17;07;08 – 00;17;14;23
Chad
He went to his back and he grabbed his arm. And I’m like, Oh, great. You know, like, are we going to have to take him to the doctor? Are we going to? I mean.

00;17;15;12 – 00;17;18;17
Chad
He hyperextended. He tear any ligaments, he tearing tendons.

00;17;18;17 – 00;17;21;13
Chad
He’s only eight. You know, he doesn’t have that, that.

00;17;21;13 – 00;17;22;24
Chad
Frame or that structure.

00;17;22;24 – 00;17;28;28
Chad
To to help his arm, you know, to stabilize his arm when he puts his arm back, you know. Did I.

00;17;28;28 – 00;17;29;08
Chad
Just.

00;17;29;08 – 00;17;30;08
Chad
Ruin him.

00;17;30;25 – 00;17;32;01
Chad
Moving forward in his.

00;17;32;01 – 00;17;36;00
Chad
Life? You know, all these things are going through my head after I watch this video.

00;17;37;00 – 00;17;37;10
Jon
And.

00;17;37;17 – 00;17;38;14
Chad
It was so bad.

00;17;38;14 – 00;17;43;02
Chad
Ernie even was like, I’m not going to watch that again. Like, that was awful. You know how.

00;17;43;02 – 00;17;52;00
Jon
Far? How far did the elbow hyper extend, like if you had to give it a degree gas like, you know, 90 like straight is how it should. It shouldn’t go past being straight.

00;17;52;16 – 00;17;54;18
Chad
So I would say probably.

00;17;54;18 – 00;17;56;09
Chad
Went at a 45 in the wrong direction.

00;17;56;10 – 00;17;57;19
Jon
Oh geez.

00;17;58;12 – 00;18;02;18
Chad
Yeah. And it’s and it’s on the I’ll send you the video after.

00;18;02;19 – 00;18;06;01
Jon
Yeah, you need to please do so.

00;18;07;02 – 00;18;15;12
Chad
So I’m at one of these turning points in my ear as I’m looking back on it thinking, you know, if I would have put him in there, he would have.

00;18;15;12 – 00;18;17;14
Chad
Attempted to wrestle. And.

00;18;18;25 – 00;18;32;06
Chad
I have no idea what could have come of it. You know, and I’m glad looking back on it that I decided to pull him from the event because that could have truly changed. You know that the.

00;18;32;06 – 00;18;33;02
Chad
Direction.

00;18;33;02 – 00;18;35;18
Chad
Of his potential life, you know, as a child.

00;18;38;13 – 00;18;38;22
Speaker 5
Yeah.

00;18;39;11 – 00;18;53;20
Jon
Well, there’s some thoughts in there, right, like that. I think that the reason the quit thing comes up is such a fear is because it’s a slippery slope once you start allowing yourself mentally even the smallest foothold to quit.

00;18;54;22 – 00;19;13;28
Jon
It’s very difficult to stop. Right, right. So I definitely can understand it, and it’s nice because both of our oldest sons are eight, which which is cool because it puts us in that position of like we’re kind of walking through some of the same struggles with our kids and all my boys are doing jujitsu now.

00;19;14;11 – 00;19;14;26
Jon
So.

00;19;15;21 – 00;19;16;05
Speaker 5
Yeah.

00;19;16;16 – 00;19;31;11
Jon
So I get a and I’m doing it too, but I get to watch them go through that adversity in their lives. Every time we go. So it’s really fun to see the different perspectives and how they handle it and the, you know, when they get tired and they want to stop.

00;19;31;11 – 00;19;55;27
Jon
And you know what, I really think we’re talking about here is it’s a legitimate means to. I take a tactical stop or pause when you’re injured, when there’s something actually wrong, and that makes it different than quitting because you’re you are being strategic and intentional in your thought to like stay in the game versus if you’re just

00;19;55;27 – 00;20;16;01
Jon
hurting you, just flag, you know, you’re just tired and then you give in for no reason except to avoid that discomfort. Right? Avoid the Colts who rise up. That’s that hurt feeling. That’s when you’re quitting. And it can be very difficult because those two things may look near identical.

00;20;16;17 – 00;20;30;20
Jon
So one of the things that stands up to me is it’s clear. You’re taking this seriously. Right, this decision for your son and all the implications that will have on his life, either if he quits or if he’s injured or what the case is.

00;20;31;01 – 00;20;46;05
Jon
At what point in that circumstance did the competitor mediator get out there? Suck it up and get it. When did doubt step into that to say, Wait, something is different here that I’ve not because something must have happened?

00;20;46;05 – 00;20;56;17
Jon
Where in your mind you went from, son? Get out there, suck it up and go. You can do this, too. Something’s not right here. What was that moment for you?

00;20;57;27 – 00;21;13;12
Chad
So in the very beginning when he came off the mat. He wasn’t looking at me. He was looking down almost like he was, he was defeated, you know? And he never looked at me the entire time and I was asking him I was.

00;21;13;12 – 00;21;14;08
Chad
Rubbing his arm.

00;21;14;08 – 00;21;14;20
Chad
I was.

00;21;15;12 – 00;21;16;05
Chad
I was trying.

00;21;16;05 – 00;21;16;19
Chad
To.

00;21;17;25 – 00;21;20;00
Chad
I don’t know comfort him in a former fashion.

00;21;21;02 – 00;21;23;02
Chad
Because that’s I could tell he was.

00;21;23;02 – 00;21;24;04
Chad
Looking for some.

00;21;24;04 – 00;21;24;19
Chad
Type of.

00;21;24;19 – 00;21;25;05
Chad
Comfort.

00;21;25;27 – 00;21;28;07
Chad
Right, and usually if he’s just.

00;21;28;07 – 00;21;31;03
Chad
Tired or emotional in some form or fashion.

00;21;31;13 – 00;21;35;10
Chad
He’s not looking for comfort, he’s just looking for, you know.

00;21;35;11 – 00;21;36;07
Chad
A redirect.

00;21;36;27 – 00;21;37;11
Jon
So he can.

00;21;37;11 – 00;21;40;17
Chad
Get out of that situation. And so he’s sitting.

00;21;40;17 – 00;21;42;28
Chad
There kind of nursing his arm and crying.

00;21;42;28 – 00;21;46;21
Chad
And doing his thing. And I’m asking him, I’m asking him. And the.

00;21;46;21 – 00;21;47;28
Chad
Guy came over the first time.

00;21;48;25 – 00;21;58;26
Chad
And I’m like, Oh, just give him some time. And the second time when the guy came over, he he kind of looked up at me and I could, like, almost read through like.

00;21;59;16 – 00;22;00;15
Chad
Hey, I really.

00;22;00;15 – 00;22;08;28
Chad
Can’t do this. This isn’t me. This is my body. And that’s when that’s when my eyes got big and it was like, OK, hold on.

00;22;08;28 – 00;22;10;24
Chad
There’s there’s a bigger issue here.

00;22;12;00 – 00;22;18;20
Chad
And I’m glad that that point, that kind of turning point happened because I was right.

00;22;19;12 – 00;22;20;09
Chad
Ready to send.

00;22;20;09 – 00;22;24;03
Chad
Him out to that match. Regardless, I mean, he was going to be like The.

00;22;24;03 – 00;22;24;23
Chad
Karate Kid.

00;22;24;23 – 00;22;25;03
Chad
Walk it.

00;22;25;03 – 00;22;25;17
Chad
Out there on.

00;22;25;17 – 00;22;28;08
Jon
one leg, you know? Yeah.

00;22;29;06 – 00;22;34;29
Chad
But I’m glad he looked up at me, and I think that was kind of that turning point of, Oh, OK, there’s something.

00;22;34;29 – 00;22;36;18
Chad
Majorly wrong here, and.

00;22;36;18 – 00;22;37;22
Chad
I can’t have him go.

00;22;37;22 – 00;22;41;22
Chad
Out there. Which is scary to even.

00;22;41;27 – 00;22;45;26
Chad
Think back on and look back on because I didn’t have any.

00;22;45;26 – 00;22;46;05
Chad
Form of.

00;22;46;05 – 00;22;50;19
Chad
Direction, and I think I think the Lord kind of helped me on that one.

00;22;51;08 – 00;23;11;16
Jon
Mm-Hmm. Getting that plug in intuition when the, you know, you’re kind of like, what’s going on, you’re pushing and then that eye contact moment of like, Whoa! All right. It clicked in and you had the wherewithal. He had the wherewithal to say, OK, this isn’t good.

00;23;12;27 – 00;23;31;15
Jon
You know, make that decision, even though you don’t know yet why. Right. And it is so interesting because. You know, I live by this very like no excuses mindset right there. Discipline and consistency will yield the results I want in life if applied with intentionality every time.

00;23;32;04 – 00;23;50;21
Jon
And there’s no excuse to miss. That is the bill, the law right of it and make the guiding principle of how I live and how I’m raising my sons, but there is an art. Everything’s not black and white, which is unfortunate because it means it’s a lot more complex and it takes a lot more energy to figure

00;23;50;21 – 00;24;03;10
Jon
things out and to realize when we I mess that up, or oh my goodness, I could have messed that up. So terrifyingly close. But you know what I’m appreciating about what we’re talking about here is like it is.

00;24;06;05 – 00;24;21;01
Jon
It is so easy in a small decision to change the entire trajectory of someone’s life. You know, both ourselves, our children, the people we work with and in those situations especially, I think like as a father with sons.

00;24;22;10 – 00;24;35;24
Jon
You kind of get this callous, right, especially when they’re young and they’re more emotional and they’re going through those things, it’s like, OK, here we go again. He’s being emotional again. He’s not that there’s anything bad with emotion, but emotion out of control.

00;24;36;08 – 00;24;50;29
Jon
So these emotions are out of control again. He’s, you know, we’re still building that muscle, that discipline on how to actually have composure and know how to process through those things and when. So I’m just going to hit the let’s cross that mind button, right?

00;24;51;18 – 00;25;15;00
Jon
And. Knowing when you have to push them past their capacity so that they can break and grow versus knowing when to pull back so that you don’t permanently irreparably break them or caused long term damage. second, like psyche out mentally because I can’t speak or physically write is something that, like I don’t think I talk about very

00;25;15;00 – 00;25;19;18
Jon
often. It’s just kind of of those assumed things. You know what’s going on?

00;25;19;22 – 00;25;21;15
Chad
It’s going to, you.

00;25;22;03 – 00;25;22;18
Jon
Know, I’m done.

00;25;22;18 – 00;25;27;09
Chad
But I was going to say, it’s funny because once we get to that.

00;25;27;09 – 00;25;27;19
Chad
Point.

00;25;27;20 – 00;25;31;27
Chad
Right, and we’ve kind of, I wouldn’t say, mastered ourselves, but we.

00;25;31;27 – 00;25;32;12
Chad
Figured it.

00;25;32;12 – 00;25;33;16
Chad
Out on.

00;25;33;24 – 00;25;35;05
Chad
On our front. Right?

00;25;35;17 – 00;25;36;27
Chad
And then children come.

00;25;37;05 – 00;25;38;03
Chad
Right and then it throws.

00;25;38;03 – 00;25;55;03
Chad
A whole different dynamic into it, right? Because you can’t feel what he’s going through, both mentally and physically. So you’re trying to gauge based on what you see and what you hear. You know, on how to kind of guide him, you know, on the day to day.

00;25;55;08 – 00;25;55;28
Chad
Right. I remember.

00;25;56;06 – 00;25;59;03
Chad
Emmett was introduced to at five and.

00;25;59;03 – 00;25;59;27
Chad
I remember the first.

00;25;59;27 – 00;26;11;05
Chad
Time he got choked out. And the first thing he did was and he wasn’t even being choked out at that point. You know, I’m I’m out. You know, this guy just tried to choke me.

00;26;11;05 – 00;26;14;25
Jon
I’m out, right? Yeah. And and so that.

00;26;16;04 – 00;26;17;28
Chad
And tried to guide them.

00;26;18;08 – 00;26;21;08
Chad
In the right direction, whereas, hey.

00;26;21;21 – 00;26;23;12
Chad
I’m just going to get choked out, right?

00;26;23;27 – 00;26;24;09
Jon
Yeah.

00;26;25;00 – 00;26;27;18
Chad
There’s a big difference between, Hey, I’m not.

00;26;27;18 – 00;26;27;27
Chad
Really.

00;26;27;27 – 00;26;33;12
Chad
Choked out yet, and oh, I’m going to go to sleep.

00;26;33;20 – 00;26;33;28
Jon
Right?

00;26;34;27 – 00;26;36;14
Chad
And so trying.

00;26;36;14 – 00;26;37;09
Chad
To figure out that.

00;26;37;09 – 00;26;56;24
Chad
Guidance and that that fine line and how do you guide them and make the right decisions for them in a physical and, you know, mental capacity is is huge. And taking it day by day is not. Not every situation is going to be the same.

00;26;57;19 – 00;27;00;09
Chad
Mm-Hmm. You know, and and leaning on.

00;27;00;24 – 00;27;03;17
Chad
You know, the Lord is crucial.

00;27;03;17 – 00;27;10;06
Chad
Right leaning on your family is crucial. Leaning on your community is crucial, right? So.

00;27;13;12 – 00;27;14;06
Jon
Yeah, it’s tough.

00;27;15;00 – 00;27;32;13
Jon
I don’t think there’s a there’s not a simple answer to it, right? I think that just to call the spade a spade, it’s a complex issue. Period end of story. And if you’re not attentive, like if we’re not paying very close attention, we’re going to fail at a much higher rate and a much more costly rate than

00;27;32;13 – 00;27;34;09
Jon
if we’re paying appropriate attention.

00;27;34;28 – 00;27;35;04
Speaker 5
And.

00;27;35;04 – 00;27;47;01
Jon
Willing to humble ourselves and take the longer path to success. Right. Because like and this brings me to like, how is he doing now, right? That was last weekend.

00;27;47;11 – 00;27;48;23
Chad
Is that correct? I was last weekend.

00;27;49;05 – 00;27;52;16
Jon
Yeah. So so where’s he at now? Houses are doing. Has his mind doing?

00;27;53;17 – 00;27;58;24
Chad
So that was the other thing that we were concerned with is, hey, we need to get this kid back.

00;27;58;24 – 00;28;01;27
Chad
On the horse, right? He just had a traumatic experience.

00;28;01;27 – 00;28;02;28
Chad
We need to get this kid back.

00;28;02;28 – 00;28;03;12
Chad
On the horse.

00;28;04;07 – 00;28;08;09
Chad
So Monday comes around and he was still off school.

00;28;08;24 – 00;28;10;06
Chad
Right from from winter break.

00;28;11;02 – 00;28;12;25
Chad
And I’m like, Hey, just relax. If we need.

00;28;12;25 – 00;28;13;26
Chad
Ice throughout the day.

00;28;13;26 – 00;28;24;12
Chad
We can ice it. But let’s get this thing. Let’s nurse this thing back to where it needs to be. And he’s all on board, and by the end of the day, he was like, Dad, I want to go on the trampoline, you know, I want to go play with my buddies.

00;28;24;12 – 00;28;27;08
Chad
I want to do this. Do that. Listen, you need to calm down.

00;28;27;08 – 00;28;28;01
Chad
You need to relax.

00;28;29;03 – 00;28;47;01
Chad
You were unable to compete. You’re not going and doing any of that right. And I was trying to show like a Hey, this is the the issues with pulling out or right quitting. This event is, hey, you can’t do this stuff until.

00;28;47;01 – 00;28;49;00
Chad
You nurture your arm back.

00;28;49;00 – 00;28;49;24
Chad
To to health.

00;28;49;24 – 00;28;54;14
Chad
So Tuesday comes around for school and everything was great. He had practice on Tuesday.

00;28;54;23 – 00;28;57;01
Chad
We got him back on the horse, he said. It was a little sore.

00;28;57;01 – 00;28;58;22
Chad
But he was ready to go. He’s ready to use.

00;28;59;10 – 00;29;05;27
Chad
He was hyped and and he went to practice. Everything was good so far.

00;29;05;29 – 00;29;08;15
Chad
You know, everything is super sore right now.

00;29;09;02 – 00;29;11;23
Chad
But he is kind of working back into it at this point.

00;29;11;24 – 00;29;13;05
Chad
Tuesdays are more drills.

00;29;13;06 – 00;29;15;09
Chad
It’s not necessarily go live one on ones.

00;29;15;21 – 00;29;15;29
Jon
Mm-Hmm.

00;29;16;23 – 00;29;17;21
Chad
So that helped.

00;29;17;22 – 00;29;19;10
Chad
And then Friday last night.

00;29;20;08 – 00;29;20;20
Chad
We had a.

00;29;20;20 – 00;29;21;16
Chad
two hour practice.

00;29;21;16 – 00;29;30;03
Chad
And and you know, he was he was full go. He was full go one on one. So that mentor getting that mentor back.

00;29;30;03 – 00;29;31;15
Chad
On the horse picture for him.

00;29;31;15 – 00;29;48;10
Chad
Was was huge, right? Because, like you said before you go down that route. There might not be any turning back. You know, that’s just a snowball effect. Yes. And it bleeds. It bleeds off it to your life. You know, it’s not just necessarily competing in athletics, right?

00;29;49;04 – 00;30;10;00
Jon
Yeah, 100% the 100%. So like one example that immediately comes to mind is last winter I was doing, I’m going to try to explain why, but I had decided that was a good idea to do a five k day every day for 100 days, among a few other things, like waking up very early, doing them in blizzards

00;30;10;00 – 00;30;24;13
Jon
and all this other jazz and lifting components and. I had already done some, like 40 over the previous two months, 45 case, and by the way, the first of those 45 cases was like the first time I’ve ran since leaving the military.

00;30;24;13 – 00;30;24;27
Jon
So I’d better.

00;30;25;02 – 00;30;26;28
Jon
Year or so ago.

00;30;27;12 – 00;30;40;15
Jon
Because I’ve been training like I’d been doing a lot of hit training and like assault, bike speed, ropes, things like that, you know, heavy lifting, but definitely not running. I was just kind of like, Nah, I’m good. And then I got into it again.

00;30;40;16 – 00;30;44;11
Jon
I had a buddy come out and we did a Goggins workout buddy on the day before Thanksgiving.

00;30;44;11 – 00;30;44;16
Speaker 5
And.

00;30;45;15 – 00;30;58;23
Jon
It’s like some five K 500 rep thing with another five k like my legs pulled because they were chasing and it was stupid and I loved it. So I was like, Oh, let’s just do a let’s do a 30 day thing with this and like every day, oh, that’s what it was.

00;30;58;23 – 00;31;05;19
Jon
I did like every day a five K deadlifts it overhead presses, and then I was like, Oh, this is good, I bet I could do 100 days.

00;31;06;01 – 00;31;06;15
Speaker 5
So it’s like.

00;31;06;24 – 00;31;19;01
Jon
Some line of logic like that over time. So I’d done a bunch. I was all tight. I wasn’t really stretching. I was lifting heavy and running like my body will evolve or die right now. I kind of my thought process.

00;31;19;17 – 00;31;30;00
Jon
I’m going, I’m on day like 30. I’m like, I’m in trouble. My my tendons were just so tight, like my Achilles heels that like I was falling, getting out of bed and stuff. But this is.

00;31;30;00 – 00;31;30;19
Speaker 5
Hilarious.

00;31;30;28 – 00;31;44;02
Jon
And then it didn’t get better, like on day 40, as like, I need to get the best shoes I can buy to see if that helps. But you know, at that point, it’s like putting a Band-Aid on on, you know, and you just lost your arm so you put a Band-Aid on.

00;31;44;02 – 00;31;56;08
Jon
It’s not going to work that those shoes did nothing. So on day, like 50, I was just going day by day at that point, right? You know, it’s like for the morning I’m running, it’s a blizzard. So like, everything about it sucks.

00;31;56;08 – 00;32;00;14
Jon
And I just have that voice and I have, like your Achilles, you’re going to break like they’re going to explode.

00;32;01;13 – 00;32;01;20
Speaker 5
Like.

00;32;02;01 – 00;32;17;00
Jon
You know, on day 56, I think 55 or 56, I was going and I was like, Legitimately, if you don’t open your eyes, every gesture strategy you are, you’re going to tear your your tendons like there’s there’s no.

00;32;17;00 – 00;32;18;07
Speaker 5
Question like.

00;32;18;07 – 00;32;29;00
Jon
At that point, it was beyond reason was beyond resolve, you know, like it was beyond logic because like, you are being a retard, if you don’t fix what you’re doing, you’re going to break yourself and need surgery and everything else.

00;32;29;03 – 00;32;47;28
Jon
I was like, OK, so I had to flirt with that decision, and I did not want to quit. So but I could not continue that challenge. So. I adjusted it because my primary goal in setting off for 100 days was to build certain consistencies kind of regardless of what I was facing.

00;32;48;06 – 00;32;56;16
Jon
I want to build that discipline, that consistency muscle. If I say I’m going to do it, I’m going to do it thing. And so I changed it. I did bike.

00;32;56;16 – 00;32;56;27
Chad
Work.

00;32;57;05 – 00;33;14;16
Jon
In stuff instead of the runs and did right kid and kind of recovered in a, you know, six months later and through 100 days, finish it with the other parameters. one fun thing there is Lindsey actually started running the day after I stopped so that the days of five K’s still happened.

00;33;14;19 – 00;33;16;04
Jon
She she picked up where I put it.

00;33;16;23 – 00;33;17;13
Chad
Oh, there you go.

00;33;18;01 – 00;33;25;20
Jon
Yeah, it’s cool. But I, you know, so I got the consistency piece by. I could never shake the feeling of like, I quit that I allowed it to beat me.

00;33;25;28 – 00;33;26;10
Speaker 5
Right?

00;33;27;00 – 00;33;39;12
Jon
So some months go by. I’m working back in health. I’m probably 80, 85%, and I just determined like, I don’t care what I have to do, I’m doing 110 days, you know, because I’ve made it like 55 days, so I’m going to double it and beat it.

00;33;39;12 – 00;33;55;03
Jon
I’m going to beat this, but it’s going to. What I realized in that decision is it was going to cost me a lot more than what I was doing. And like 30 days in. I was starting to run into some of the same problems, and I was like, I have to get my information down, right?

00;33;55;05 – 00;34;08;12
Jon
I’m stretching now, so that was helping. I was training more intense training like I was. I was engineering my life a lot more to get this done as like I have to get the inflammation down and I know I can put down some alcohol.

00;34;09;24 – 00;34;22;13
Jon
You know, I was drinking pretty consistently. I was like, Well, I know for a fact that that’s causing a lot of inflammation. So like 30 something days, and I just I finally just pulled the trigger to say, OK, I’m not drinking until this is done.

00;34;23;15 – 00;34;31;28
Jon
So I gave that up. I start cutting sugar out and ultimately to shorten the story, I made it. I finish and days with the. Calm down, man.

00;34;32;10 – 00;34;34;03
Speaker 5
And. Yeah.

00;34;34;10 – 00;34;44;09
Jon
And like the victory of that was so much more mental and physical. Like it almost. Like, I’m slow climbing back into the hundreds, you know, like sub 200 and.

00;34;44;09 – 00;34;44;19
Speaker 5
Wait.

00;34;45;02 – 00;35;00;23
Jon
For my lifts because it just stripped me down. I’m like 190 right now, so I’m like £20 lighter than I’ve been, like what I did in high school. But mentally, I gave up everything to get after it. And the gift the fruit of that was.

00;35;02;06 – 00;35;18;16
Jon
That whisper that, oh, if it just gets bad enough, you can give up. I killed that voice. So that was the that’s why I was so excited come back in. That’s why it’s so valuable that if even though I had, I don’t disagree with my decision the first time to alter the course I needed to.

00;35;19;07 – 00;35;30;06
Jon
But that didn’t excuse me from getting back in that arena in defeating it to prove to myself what I can do. Just like with Emmett, he needed to get back on this match and get back on the proverbial horse, right?

00;35;30;06 – 00;35;43;28
Jon
Like, you can do this, you’re stronger than this, you’re more resilient than this, you’re more capable than this, and now you have that victory to build on. So that was like what was the most interesting for me in the what I just shared is it wasn’t an event.

00;35;45;07 – 00;36;03;14
Jon
It was a lot of events strung together, you know, like every emotion, every mood, piece of motivation and the complete lack thereof. Was experienced over that time in the same answer he’s given. No. Here I go. Right. So it was just like this cool.

00;36;04;09 – 00;36;15;19
Jon
I know I feel I just felt like it was related, but but it is so true because, oh, the point of it is, yeah, you mentioned that’s like a slippery slope one just to quit in that area, but also it starts to affect your whole life.

00;36;15;24 – 00;36;27;01
Jon
You’re absolutely right. The confidence that I walk through life knowing that. OK, I’m not going to do something, I’m going to do this. Known for a fact that when I say to myself, I’m speaking the truth. Right, right.

00;36;27;12 – 00;36;50;22
Jon
Like, I don’t doubt it. That’s pretty cool. Like, I decided this year I’m not going to drink. So I’m, you know, January first, 2023, a pop open, a cold one to celebrate the full year, right? I’m on a 90 day thing right now that’s focused on strength and jujitsu, and I’m on a 30 day like sugar cut

00;36;51;14 – 00;37;08;26
Jon
. So it’s just kind of fun because like, all those things don’t have nearly the mental burden on my mind to say, I’m going to do those that even just that simple when, like the simpler ones did last year, I’m like racking and stacking different things now, where last year took everything, I had to just commit to do

00;37;08;27 – 00;37;24;04
Jon
one thing consistently for 100 days. So it’s kind of cool because not only does. Quitting potentially lead to how you victimize yourself throughout life and therefore rob your power from your self, autonomy, your sovereignty, your capability.

00;37;24;25 – 00;37;25;01
Speaker 5
Right.

00;37;25;03 – 00;37;45;17
Jon
But choosing not to quit in engineering, how to overcome has the exact opposite in a positive way effect of building momentum in the positive direction. So it’s amazing because you hoping you having the the wisdom, you know, the the Lord giving you the insight to say, Hey, shut up and look at your son.

00;37;45;17 – 00;37;57;29
Jon
He’s broken right now. Whatever that trigger was for you to be able to pull him out, then realize fully kurdi’s injured and then help coach him through the injury instead of through the weakness of mind, which was the first perception.

00;37;58;12 – 00;37;58;20
Speaker 5
Has.

00;37;58;20 – 00;38;11;20
Jon
Led him back to less than a full week later. He had a successful wrestling match last night. You know where he was going full force, and he’s probably jazzed about it and excited. And now you can make the beautiful point that, hey, why going to knock us down?

00;38;11;21 – 00;38;15;03
Jon
And sometimes we need to be able to know when it’s real and when it’s not.

00;38;15;15 – 00;38;15;24
Speaker 5
Yeah.

00;38;15;29 – 00;38;28;03
Jon
And we learn how to adjust and respond to that. But the one thing that is the same is it never has to defeat us if we draw breath. We can continue to fight, you know, that’s kind of this beautiful thing.

00;38;30;18 – 00;38;31;17
Chad
Yeah, nice.

00;38;31;19 – 00;38;32;06
Chad
It’s a great.

00;38;32;07 – 00;38;36;05
Chad
Point. And what what changes the dynamic between.

00;38;36;16 – 00;38;37;25
Chad
Your hundred and ten.

00;38;37;25 – 00;38;39;21
Chad
Day, you know, adventure.

00;38;39;22 – 00;38;44;15
Chad
Your five key adventure that you were on versus.

00;38;45;18 – 00;38;49;05
Chad
The guidance and you and your children is imagine.

00;38;50;02 – 00;38;50;19
Speaker 5
Your.

00;38;50;28 – 00;38;53;12
Chad
eight year old or just your son.

00;38;53;12 – 00;38;57;15
Chad
In general doing the 110 day five K and kind of watching.

00;38;57;15 – 00;38;58;11
Chad
That journey play.

00;38;58;11 – 00;39;01;12
Chad
Out and guiding him based on the.

00;39;01;12 – 00;39;02;00
Chad
Hurdles.

00;39;02;25 – 00;39;04;10
Chad
And ups and downs that you.

00;39;04;10 – 00;39;05;00
Chad
Went through.

00;39;05;25 – 00;39;19;03
Chad
Right. And it really changes that dynamic of how do I guide him in those those building blocks of life to to succeed? Right? Because that’s all we’re doing as as.

00;39;19;03 – 00;39;20;29
Chad
Fathers, right? We’re creating.

00;39;20;29 – 00;39;21;27
Chad
These building blocks.

00;39;21;27 – 00;39;22;06
Chad
In their.

00;39;22;06 – 00;39;25;27
Chad
Lives so they can build off and grow and succeed. Right?

00;39;26;02 – 00;39;26;14
Jon
Yeah.

00;39;27;10 – 00;39;32;07
Chad
And the dynamic is is it’s a scary thing to think about. You know.

00;39;33;12 – 00;39;49;27
Jon
It is. And I guess that’s where I just feel such an inclination. I a need to do these things because I don’t want to be the blind leading the blind. Right? I don’t want to be. So Mike has been my best days were ten years ago, and I’m trying to lead my sons out of that kind.

00;39;50;02 – 00;39;50;21
Jon
That sounds like a.

00;39;51;00 – 00;39;52;02
Jon
Really bad recipe.

00;39;52;28 – 00;39;53;11
Jon
So.

00;39;53;29 – 00;40;05;03
Jon
So like this stuff here, man. It’s like every, every thing I exact for myself to to improve who I am. I feel like it just gives me just a drop more clarity and being able to better guide my sons.

00;40;05;03 – 00;40;13;08
Jon
And no matter how good I get, they’re going to have faults with me. And when we grow up, there’s going to be hurts that I can help heal through, you know, through apologizing.

00;40;13;08 – 00;40;14;14
Speaker 5
And owning.

00;40;14;14 – 00;40;28;09
Jon
My shortcomings, right? Because that’s reality. But hey, you know, I’m going to give it my freaking all. Period end of story. And I feel like that’s the least I could do for for for myself personally, the the free gift of grace that I was given, right?

00;40;28;10 – 00;40;47;15
Jon
It’s not required of me, but because of the Lord I serve, it’s the least I can do. And that really motivates me to want to close the gap between who I am today and who I could be, you know, and when I, you know, when I’m dying, if it’s not some quick like truck, it’s me on the

00;40;47;22 – 00;40;57;19
Jon
of road cause I’m doing something silly, but like if I’m on the proverbial deathbed in the best version of who I was was to walk up with me, like walk up to me at the end of my life.

00;40;58;13 – 00;41;11;22
Jon
I want there to be zero gap. That’s my goal. And I have to make up for a lot of lost time and really stupid decisions. So I’m pretty motivated to do it. And, you know, they’ll just give that perspective to help us with our kiddos.

00;41;12;04 – 00;41;25;22
Jon
So it’s it’s fun because all this stuff feeds into each other, you know, and I love the seriousness with which we’re talking about, like, Oh, you know, so many people would just be like, Oh, it’s just just a wrestling match.

00;41;25;22 – 00;41;39;15
Jon
Rub some dirt in it. Get back out there. He breaks his arm or finally take them back and then just ridicule him. Never watch the video. Just kind of shame him. And like, there’s so many directions, whether you put him in or didn’t, that this could have gone poorly.

00;41;40;15 – 00;41;54;13
Jon
And the fact that a week later, there’s lessons learned, there’s really fruitful father ing and coaching conversations had and, you know, and it’s now more resilient for it. Right? He’s more capable for it. That’s such a.

00;41;54;13 – 00;41;54;26
Speaker 5
Gift.

00;41;55;12 – 00;42;04;26
Jon
And. It’s just such a gift, and it makes me wonder. Do you think so, I’m aware of an injury you had recently.

00;42;05;06 – 00;42;05;13
Speaker 5
And.

00;42;05;13 – 00;42;26;14
Jon
Kind of got going back to the one small decision can be life changing. Do you think that what you walk through with that helped give you pause in this circumstance? Like with Emmett? And if you don’t mind, we kind of share what did happen with your injury and how that’s affected things.

00;42;27;04 – 00;42;31;10
Jon
And also just update me on where we are now because we haven’t talked about that in a while.

00;42;31;25 – 00;42;45;17
Chad
Yeah, absolutely. So I I injured my back in the beginning of 2020 in the army, so I completely blew out my back.

00;42;47;05 – 00;42;48;26
Chad
And 30 days later, I went.

00;42;48;26 – 00;42;50;15
Chad
Into, I guess, what you.

00;42;50;15 – 00;42;52;27
Chad
Would consider emergency back surgery.

00;42;53;22 – 00;42;56;00
Chad
So I had a limb and asked me, Dissect me.

00;42;57;24 – 00;42;58;10
Jon
At least.

00;42;59;27 – 00;43;02;02
Chad
Yeah, I know, right, that’s the only way I can remember it with all.

00;43;02;02 – 00;43;03;06
Chad
These, you know, medical.

00;43;03;06 – 00;43;05;00
Chad
Terms and the neurosurgeons thrown.

00;43;05;00 – 00;43;05;12
Jon
Out, but.

00;43;06;03 – 00;43;18;27
Chad
My disc cut off my spinal canal completely, so I lost function to my bowels. I I had to relearn how to walk. It was a disaster. And I’m still going.

00;43;18;27 – 00;43;19;10
Chad
Through.

00;43;19;10 – 00;43;20;23
Chad
This and I think I.

00;43;20;23 – 00;43;22;12
Chad
Will be for for the remainder.

00;43;22;27 – 00;43;30;15
Chad
Of my life, to be, to be quite honest. But it is really opened my eyes to.

00;43;31;03 – 00;43;32;14
Chad
You know, adversity as a.

00;43;32;14 – 00;43;48;28
Chad
Whole, right? Because I’ve been an athlete my entire life, I’ve been a competitor my entire life. But this truly knocked me down on my butt and said, Hey, you know, now we really need to rethink the way we do things because I’ve always been the biggest, the.

00;43;48;28 – 00;43;50;06
Chad
Strongest in the room.

00;43;50;29 – 00;43;57;29
Chad
That was that was kind of what I was known for. You know, and and to be knocked down.

00;43;59;03 – 00;44;00;18
Chad
And to try to reach.

00;44;00;24 – 00;44;02;19
Chad
Reimagine my life for me.

00;44;02;19 – 00;44;03;15
Chad
As a person.

00;44;04;15 – 00;44;05;18
Chad
And kind of this.

00;44;05;18 – 00;44;06;14
Chad
New form.

00;44;07;07 – 00;44;20;00
Chad
Has been very eye-opening. And I think it’s been nice for not only my my wife to see, but my children to see as well, right? It’s like you said before, you don’t want to be that that old has been right.

00;44;20;12 – 00;44;21;19
Chad
You want to. You want.

00;44;21;19 – 00;44;22;27
Chad
To show your children.

00;44;22;27 – 00;44;23;13
Chad
You know.

00;44;23;17 – 00;44;24;01
Chad
What you’re.

00;44;24;01 – 00;44;25;19
Chad
Capable of. You know.

00;44;26;11 – 00;44;28;05
Chad
In in your first person.

00;44;28;05 – 00;44;31;11
Chad
So I had to.

00;44;31;23 – 00;44;32;13
Chad
Relearn how to.

00;44;32;13 – 00;44;33;13
Chad
Walk. I went through.

00;44;33;13 – 00;44;34;16
Chad
Physical therapy.

00;44;35;11 – 00;44;46;11
Chad
And went through the whole thing. My gym days now. And this really hurts to say, but consists of walking on the treadmill at an incline and then.

00;44;46;18 – 00;44;47;16
Chad
Very light.

00;44;47;16 – 00;45;01;14
Chad
Weight in the gym in some form or fashion, right? Depending on how I’m feeling. It really comes down to how I slept and how I wake up in the morning. Do you know that feeling and this is going to kind.

00;45;01;14 – 00;45;02;09
Chad
Of get weird, but you’re.

00;45;02;09 – 00;45;10;21
Chad
Not feeling when you’re sitting on the toilet and your legs go numb? Mm-Hmm. That’s how I feel all the time. So to.

00;45;10;22 – 00;45;11;22
Chad
Put some perspective.

00;45;11;22 – 00;45;17;01
Chad
Into it, it’s it is a brutal feeling, but it is what it is.

00;45;18;05 – 00;45;30;28
Jon
But so just for clarity, it feels like your legs are, they’ve fallen asleep and are coming back. So it’s like Mike Tingle singing kind of very unpleasant. Mm hmm. So that’s it right now. Yeah.

00;45;33;13 – 00;45;42;02
Chad
And I went and got a cortisone shot at like Med 2021, and I’m laying on my on my stomach, right?

00;45;42;03 – 00;45;45;10
Chad
My wife’s over there in the room and that the doctor’s over there and.

00;45;45;20 – 00;45;53;00
Chad
He’s got this big old needle. He’s about to put my back right and I’m like, looking back, like, you’re going to put that on my back. And it’s like, Oh.

00;45;53;00 – 00;45;54;01
Chad
It won’t hurt. You know.

00;45;54;01 – 00;45;54;23
Chad
It’s going to be fine.

00;45;55;10 – 00;45;56;29
Chad
We’re going to rub some local.

00;45;57;08 – 00;46;14;17
Chad
Some local numbing medicine on your back. You’ll be good, right? Yeah, like. You’ve got to be kidding. Like, why don’t you show me that, you know, I’m sitting on my stomach, right? He’s doing this as he’s watching the screen right now, he’s going like this, right?

00;46;14;22 – 00;46;16;15
Chad
And this is based on what my wife is saying.

00;46;16;24 – 00;46;21;14
Jon
So this is he’s digging around looking at the screen to put the needle in your back.

00;46;21;29 – 00;46;22;20
Chad
He’s trying to get.

00;46;22;20 – 00;46;23;08
Chad
It in the right.

00;46;23;08 – 00;46;32;02
Chad
Spot, right? And and he’s like, Yeah, I just I don’t want to hit a nerve. And I’m like, hearing this like, you got to be kidding me right now. I get out.

00;46;32;03 – 00;46;32;24
Jon
I of every stomach.

00;46;33;05 – 00;46;51;29
Chad
On my stomach. I’m in the most vulnerable place in my life at this point. And he hits a nerve, and I about lose it. What I’m like I am will start cutting. My legs are flailing. He’s got this needle in here that’s like this long in my back.

00;46;52;18 – 00;46;58;26
Chad
I’m like, This is never going to happen again, doc like. He’s like, Oh, that’s not good. I’m like, What do you mean? What’s not.

00;46;58;26 – 00;47;00;23
Jon
Good? He just hit a nerve.

00;47;01;08 – 00;47;07;24
Chad
My leg is like losing it. I’m mentally losing it. There’s nothing I could do. I’m not.

00;47;07;24 – 00;47;08;12
Chad
Strapped.

00;47;08;12 – 00;47;10;15
Chad
Down. You know, I’m just laying on a table.

00;47;11;02 – 00;47;12;10
Jon
Yeah, my wife’s.

00;47;12;10 – 00;47;14;12
Chad
Panicking over there. I’m like looking at her.

00;47;16;26 – 00;47;21;04
Chad
We’re one of the worst experiences, and I will never get.

00;47;21;04 – 00;47;22;01
Chad
Another one of those.

00;47;23;01 – 00;47;23;10
Jon
Appeals.

00;47;25;04 – 00;47;26;12
Chad
You can cut me in half.

00;47;26;12 – 00;47;27;12
Chad
Before that ever happens.

00;47;27;12 – 00;47;30;04
Jon
Again. Oh.

00;47;30;19 – 00;47;32;00
Chad
It was the worst experience.

00;47;32;00 – 00;47;32;12
Chad
Of my life.

00;47;33;24 – 00;47;37;07
Jon
But. Yeah. Yeah.

00;47;37;28 – 00;47;47;21
Jon
I love that we’re laughing about the worst experience your life like tears coming down my face laughing about this. Not that you have their pain, but man, you’re doing a good job of telling the story.

00;47;48;26 – 00;47;49;19
Chad
Well, this is the.

00;47;49;19 – 00;47;50;10
Chad
Best part, right?

00;47;50;21 – 00;48;01;16
Chad
He’s all right. All right. We’re done. I’m like, Oh yeah, thanks, doc. I’m glad we’re done right. So I go to get up and I like, couldn’t feel my legs.

00;48;02;10 – 00;48;03;28
Jon
My legs went numb.

00;48;04;10 – 00;48;08;21
Chad
And I’m like, 00, oh, I got to sit back down. I’m like, Hey, you’re going to need a wheelchair.

00;48;08;21 – 00;48;09;18
Chad
Or at least three guys.

00;48;09;18 – 00;48;18;13
Chad
To carry me back to the car because this isn’t going to work. So he gets a wheelchair, right? And I’m like, I can. I can hold my my body.

00;48;18;13 – 00;48;19;13
Chad
Up off the ground, but.

00;48;19;13 – 00;48;33;04
Chad
Just my arms. I couldn’t hold my body up off the ground with my arms like I don’t know what it affected, but when you hit that nerve, it shot my leg and then shot up and I was like all over the place.

00;48;34;05 – 00;48;36;05
Chad
So I finally get in this wheelchair.

00;48;36;05 – 00;48;37;02
Chad
After, you know.

00;48;37;12 – 00;48;43;27
Chad
An army of people come in and help me in this wheelchair. And he’s pushing it one of his assistants.

00;48;43;27 – 00;48;45;09
Chad
Or whatever, pushing me onto to the car.

00;48;46;12 – 00;48;46;24
Jon
You know, to.

00;48;46;24 – 00;48;58;07
Chad
The car and I’m like, All right now you’re going to help me get in the car, you know, like, how the heck do you think I’m getting in my truck? And of course, I finally made it, you know, I played.

00;48;58;07 – 00;49;00;05
Chad
Monkey bars and grabbing on the door.

00;49;00;06 – 00;49;09;23
Chad
I’m like hanging off a wall, whatever. But I get in the car. Let me just tell you, I’m glad my kids weren’t there because that was one of those, you know.

00;49;09;26 – 00;49;12;07
Chad
Experiences that I’m never going through again.

00;49;13;12 – 00;49;14;22
Jon
And they’ll never have to see.

00;49;15;08 – 00;49;15;24
Jon
So, yeah.

00;49;17;08 – 00;49;19;03
Jon
Goodness gracious, was Kate with you?

00;49;19;19 – 00;49;20;07
Chad
Yeah, she was.

00;49;20;08 – 00;49;28;16
Jon
Yeah, because she was in the room. So I’m just thinking poor thing like how she getting you out of the car when you get home, you know, like, step to.

00;49;30;05 – 00;49;31;26
Chad
So she grabbed my walker because.

00;49;32;10 – 00;49;33;26
Chad
I was getting around via.

00;49;33;26 – 00;49;34;15
Chad
A walker.

00;49;35;29 – 00;49;37;27
Chad
So my my children have seen me.

00;49;38;04 – 00;49;39;18
Chad
On a walker for months.

00;49;39;27 – 00;49;41;18
Chad
They see me with a cane for months.

00;49;42;00 – 00;49;43;06
Chad
They see me at my worst.

00;49;44;03 – 00;49;46;19
Jon
Yeah, I had to.

00;49;48;07 – 00;49;49;14
Chad
So after surgery.

00;49;49;15 – 00;49;51;10
Chad
Let’s take a step back real quick. So my.

00;49;51;10 – 00;49;52;11
Chad
Actual surgery.

00;49;52;17 – 00;49;52;28
Chad
So I had.

00;49;52;28 – 00;49;56;08
Chad
My surgery, right? I had to relearn how to walk.

00;49;56;09 – 00;49;57;06
Chad
It was a mess, I was in the.

00;49;57;06 – 00;49;57;28
Chad
Hospital whenever.

00;49;59;00 – 00;50;09;17
Chad
I get home. And you know, they just pump you with all of this medicine and all this stuff, right? Mm-Hmm. And you’re unable to use the restroom.

00;50;10;11 – 00;50;10;23
Chad
You know?

00;50;12;20 – 00;50;16;22
Chad
So we go about a week that a week, I’m unable to.

00;50;16;22 – 00;50;17;14
Chad
Use the restroom.

00;50;17;17 – 00;50;21;08
Chad
And I’m getting to the point where, hey, I might have to go back to the doctor, we might.

00;50;21;08 – 00;50;22;12
Chad
Have a bigger problem here.

00;50;22;13 – 00;50;39;08
Chad
Screw my back like I’m not using the restroom. He might as well just cut me in half at this point and call it a day. So my wife, I talk about the most vulnerable time in your life. She says, get on your hands and knees.

00;50;40;16 – 00;50;42;22
Jon
Oh, I just.

00;50;42;22 – 00;50;43;24
Chad
Had back surgery.

00;50;43;25 – 00;50;44;07
Chad
You know.

00;50;44;22 – 00;50;50;24
Jon
You got you got the forklift in the back. That’s it’s going to get me on my head so I.

00;50;50;24 – 00;50;58;16
Chad
Can’t hold my hands and knees. Saying she says I’m going to fix this right now, and I want.

00;51;02;16 – 00;51;08;17
Jon
This is this is not good. This is. But yeah.

00;51;09;05 – 00;51;12;12
Chad
We got a little closer in life, to say the least as.

00;51;15;22 – 00;51;16;20
Jon
So it’s going to in a way.

00;51;17;09 – 00;51;18;29
Chad
We ten years.

00;51;18;29 – 00;51;21;03
Chad
And that was the most vulnerable time in my.

00;51;21;03 – 00;51;21;14
Jon
Life.

00;51;23;12 – 00;51;27;15
Chad
I can’t believe I’m actually talking to you about this is like so embarrassing.

00;51;28;06 – 00;51;29;01
Jon
Oh my gosh.

00;51;31;07 – 00;51;32;02
Chad
Kate Middleton So.

00;51;32;02 – 00;51;32;28
Chad
For me, every time.

00;51;33;02 – 00;51;35;01
Chad
Oh, did it help? Are you kidding.

00;51;35;01 – 00;51;43;23
Jon
Me? Oh, goodness.

00;51;44;07 – 00;51;48;24
Jon
This is the first time I’ve cried laughing on this on this podcast, I so appreciate you.

00;51;51;17 – 00;51;55;00
Jon
Dude, you know, there’s something yeah.

00;51;55;12 – 00;52;06;14
Jon
There’s something really powerful, and I wish yours. I wish, hope and pray that this can be overcome over life in that you can continue to gain more functionality back.

00;52;06;28 – 00;52;07;09
Speaker 5
Right?

00;52;08;04 – 00;52;27;27
Jon
But I think that as still young men know, transitioning to middle age or whatever that means. But I think it’s important for, you know, whatever we choose to allow that to mean. I think it’s important for everyone. And everyone doesn’t get this, and I think that’s a bummer because.

00;52;30;25 – 00;52;44;08
Jon
There’s something extremely valuable about the humility that comes from seeing the frailty of your flesh right of your body, of how easy it is to break and in mine. For me, that was Mirza, right, which is like a crazy staph infection.

00;52;44;10 – 00;53;02;07
Jon
I can’t remember if you were one of the blessed souls who actually like helped me clean out some of those wounds in the field, ever. Or if you were able to avoid that in our time together. But I was I had thousands of them over the course of like three years in an infected trajectory and all these

00;53;02;07 – 00;53;03;25
Jon
other things. And it was really bad, like.

00;53;04;12 – 00;53;04;23
Speaker 5
Really.

00;53;04;23 – 00;53;21;01
Jon
Bad infections. All of them would be from like the waist down and like from the from the place of almost going systemic, one leg being swollen twice the size of the other two, you know, like little quarter sized things that just you could feel every heartbeat in your sweating and you have fever and just it was fine

00;53;21;02 – 00;53;34;01
Jon
. So for like for me, there is about three years of consistent pain. There’s two of those years I didn’t have a day without at least one, and for three years, they just were consistently shown up in different severity and stuff.

00;53;34;01 – 00;53;46;27
Jon
And, you know, obviously saw specialists saw doctors in their care. Here’s the thing there’s two types of versa. There’s one that is internal and it affects your organs. It has a high lethality rate. We see it take out a lot of like elderly people at surgeries and stuff.

00;53;48;00 – 00;54;02;07
Jon
And then there’s one that’s really more external attacks the flesh. It’s not nearly as lethal, but we don’t have any way to get rid of it. It, like your body, will just have to build any immunity to it over the course of years.

00;54;03;10 – 00;54;22;11
Jon
As like so we can in immunity be built, yes. I was like, OK. Michael Long three to five years. And sure enough, I don’t get them anymore at all. It’s been well over 18 months. I. I don’t remember the last time I had one, and I want to say it was when I was still in the army

00;54;22;11 – 00;54;36;24
Jon
, so it’s been at least a couple of years, few years. Right. But there’s something really valuable that being in constant pain, not being able to do certain things with my life because of knowing that I would have those infections and will keep getting them despite what I did.

00;54;37;22 – 00;54;53;29
Jon
It shows the frailty and humility, and you appreciate life differently and you interact with life differently if you don’t let it defeat you. Right? And I think that’s the the blessing of that lesson, right? I’m grateful I got it now.

00;54;54;01 – 00;55;11;22
Jon
I wouldn’t want to relive it, but I’m grateful that I experienced it because I engage with life so much more differently. Having experienced that and realizing like. Yeah. You know, anyone can do it any time, no, like really genuinely, my body is nothing special.

00;55;12;01 – 00;55;29;17
Jon
I am. It’s so easy for me to be gone. And every moment is a gift and tomorrow is not promised and it could be anything right. Like this morning I was doing walking lunges and the gym was so cold that one of my feet slipped enough to cause my back to kind of tighten up in a way

00;55;30;07 – 00;55;43;19
Jon
that made me say words and get concerned. And I the rest of the workout, like I had to drop weight down to the bar and just do stretching and keep the movements going, and that I was able to climb back up a little bit.

00;55;43;19 – 00;55;56;06
Jon
But it’s amazing. It’s like one flash, one simple thing one. Oh, I think the matcher have enough traction, you know, and I could be in the same position where my discs do the same thing and just that realization.

00;55;56;06 – 00;56;14;03
Jon
I think there’s something valuable in especially mixed with youth of like. If you realize that it can all change and end in an instant. But that you’re also more resilient than you probably imagined. There’s like this beautiful space in between those two things that a lot can be happened and.

00;56;16;03 – 00;56;24;19
Jon
I don’t know. That’s just what I was thinking about as you’re going through this, right? You’re used to being the biggest or strongest guy in the room and now and that’s to the point, that’s part of your identity.

00;56;24;27 – 00;56;45;17
Jon
Right? And now one of the things that makes us so painfully, existentially and mentally is you’re redefining your identity to be something that’s extremely valuable. That’s not based on that default. Right? And though painful and our long journey that’s going to create, in my opinion, a more evolved, powerful version of Chad.

00;56;46;08 – 00;56;54;25
Jon
Right? If you choose to use it that way, you can also choose to be Alaimo and just accept defeat and get weak and soft. And you know, everything life sucks.

00;56;54;25 – 00;56;56;05
Jon
And that’s.

00;56;56;18 – 00;56;57;01
Jon
But I don’t.

00;56;57;02 – 00;56;58;05
Chad
Think that’s not happening.

00;57;00;08 – 00;57;16;18
Jon
So it’s fun, though, because. And it’s probably weird saying like there’s there’s a silver in every great loss, there’s at least some small gain. Right? And like for you, as I’m thinking about you in the there is a great loss physically and a huge mountain to climb.

00;57;17;02 – 00;57;34;24
Jon
Right? I personally believe that you you have the ability to gain back what? I just don’t know what that path looks like, and it’s probably very different than you experience, but I believe you can gain back a lot because if you can move it and if you have that, I just think that it’s a matter of how

00;57;35;04 – 00;57;52;08
Jon
in time and desire and what that mental games like, right? What truth is being spoken in your own mind? What lies what? What’s the inner dialog? Because there’s so many examples of people who’ve undergone so much worse than either of us and they rebuild their bodies and their brains more strongly.

00;57;52;22 – 00;58;09;01
Jon
And yeah, it may take years, but they do it. And then they become unstoppable forces of nature. So like, look at this for you, I’m just like, OK, you were already a force to be reckoned with. When you evolve beyond this to the point that you’re grateful, it’s all happened because you’re stronger for it in every way

00;58;09;01 – 00;58;18;27
Jon
imaginable. Because of it, you’re going to be an unforeseeable and unstoppable force of nature. And I do believe that that is in the cards for.

00;58;18;27 – 00;58;19;25
Speaker 5
You and that.

00;58;20;00 – 00;58;26;24
Jon
That’s exciting for me because. You know, there’s hope in that right, and that hope can heal quite a fight.

00;58;29;10 – 00;58;37;21
Chad
You know, you know, what’s interesting about that, too, is is now that I kind of look back on it. Hmm. My wife, right, I’ve.

00;58;37;21 – 00;58;38;22
Chad
Always been a gym rat my.

00;58;38;22 – 00;58;41;15
Chad
Entire life. I didn’t want to run. I didn’t need to run.

00;58;41;16 – 00;58;42;20
Chad
I don’t need to run from anybody.

00;58;42;20 – 00;58;57;18
Chad
I can get in my car if I needed to write. That was my mindset, you know, and my wife, I mean, my wife and she’s an endurance athlete, right? She’s a triathlete. She Ironman yada yada yada. Right. She’s done it.

00;58;57;18 – 00;58;57;24
Jon
All.

00;58;58;28 – 00;58;59;27
Chad
So I meet her and.

00;58;59;27 – 00;59;11;10
Chad
She’s like, Oh, you need to run. You know you need it. I’m like, OK, you know, I’ll run a five k with you, right? And at that time, it was like, Gosh, who’s that guy running a five k like?

00;59;11;10 – 00;59;16;07
Chad
He doesn’t look like he should be here, you know? Yeah, because I was I was big at that time. I think my.

00;59;16;07 – 00;59;16;25
Chad
first five.

00;59;16;25 – 00;59;27;08
Chad
K was back in, like 2000. twelve, maybe for the holiday bowl, I believe it was down here in San Diego. And so I run this five K and we’re in a.

00;59;27;08 – 00;59;30;18
Chad
Bright yellow T-shirt. And I remember just looking around like.

00;59;30;27 – 00;59;38;24
Chad
Man, I’m really running for fun right now. Like my wife is way out there ahead of me and I’m running for fun. I actually paid.

00;59;39;08 – 00;59;42;11
Jon
To run, you know, so I’m running.

00;59;42;18 – 00;59;53;00
Chad
And I get done with it. I’m like, Actually, you know what? That felt pretty good after the fact because I’ve always ran sprints. You know, I played football my entire life. I’m running sprints. I’m not running any.

00;59;53;00 – 00;59;55;02
Chad
Farther than 100 yards.

00;59;55;02 – 01;00;05;11
Chad
Max, you know, on a holiday. So I get done with that, I’m like, you know what, that’s that wasn’t too bad, you know? So over the years, I would.

01;00;05;11 – 01;00;07;01
Chad
Run here and there and never really.

01;00;07;01 – 01;00;13;17
Chad
Liked it, you know? And then all of a sudden I get back from shoot.

01;00;13;17 – 01;00;16;13
Chad
My first I ran my first Ironman.

01;00;16;13 – 01;00;23;18
Chad
Was in 2018, right? So she starts bleeding off on me on, Hey, this running thing. And all of a sudden.

01;00;23;18 – 01;00;24;15
Chad
I start figuring.

01;00;24;15 – 01;00;27;03
Chad
This out like, Hey, you know, this is actually really.

01;00;27;03 – 01;00;27;25
Chad
Good for you.

01;00;27;28 – 01;00;33;23
Chad
You know, I need to get my weight down. I’m not playing football anymore. I don’t need to be this heavy and I shouldn’t be this heavy.

01;00;34;13 – 01;00;35;24
Chad
And for perspective, how big?

01;00;35;24 – 01;00;41;17
Jon
How big is big. You know, just to paint that mental picture, you’re what like 64, 63. Oh.

01;00;42;02 – 01;00;48;08
Chad
I was six to 285 and lean and lean. Yeah, yeah.

01;00;48;26 – 01;00;58;03
Jon
Which is a monster. So you had 60 to £80 on me. You didn’t have. You have near £90 on me, and I had to carry you. Thank you.

01;01;01;01 – 01;01;02;29
Chad
I think I was a little less lean.

01;01;03;23 – 01;01;04;19
Chad
When we were at.

01;01;04;19 – 01;01;11;20
Chad
At Bullock, but yeah, it was I was up there, you know, and I didn’t need to be. And I think that’s what.

01;01;11;20 – 01;01;12;23
Chad
I’m starting to realize.

01;01;12;23 – 01;01;14;04
Chad
As you know, I’ve gone through.

01;01;14;04 – 01;01;15;06
Chad
This certain adversity.

01;01;15;06 – 01;01;22;14
Chad
In my life that, Hey, what do I need to be that big for? You know, I don’t need to be pushed around. Trent Williams, you know, at.

01;01;22;14 – 01;01;23;01
Chad
The University.

01;01;23;01 – 01;01;31;20
Chad
Of Oklahoma anymore. I’m done with that, you know? Mm hmm. And so ideally for me, I’m right now on a kick. Me and my wife just.

01;01;31;20 – 01;01;32;01
Chad
Started.

01;01;32;01 – 01;01;32;27
Chad
This competition.

01;01;32;27 – 01;01;33;14
Chad
With our Apple.

01;01;33;14 – 01;01;53;22
Chad
Watches. Hmm. Which is the biggest scam, by the way, she’s figured out how to scam the system for this competition. I want to get to 2:25. 2:25 is like where I want to be at in terms of my body, I don’t know if I mean we’ll just see what happens.

01;01;53;23 – 01;02;00;13
Chad
I’ve I’ve dropped about ten over the last week, but with this competition she OK.

01;02;00;29 – 01;02;03;03
Chad
Just a disclaimer, right?

01;02;03;24 – 01;02;05;00
Chad
She’s going to she’s going to try to.

01;02;05;01 – 01;02;06;20
Chad
She’s going to try to run a half marathon on.

01;02;06;20 – 01;02;08;29
Chad
Sunday so that she beats me.

01;02;09;23 – 01;02;11;00
Chad
She leaves her watch.

01;02;11;00 – 01;02;11;09
Chad
On.

01;02;11;28 – 01;02;13;16
Chad
Because it counts for calories.

01;02;14;04 – 01;02;17;26
Chad
It counts for active activity time or active.

01;02;17;26 – 01;02;18;08
Chad
Workout.

01;02;18;08 – 01;02;21;08
Chad
Time, and then it counts four times standing up.

01;02;21;08 – 01;02;21;23
Chad
Throughout the.

01;02;21;23 – 01;02;27;18
Chad
Day. So those are the three gauged metrics that they go off on your Apple Watch. You have you have an Apple Watch.

01;02;28;02 – 01;02;29;16
Jon
I don’t, but I am familiar.

01;02;30;12 – 01;02;32;27
Chad
Yeah, so. So there’s this internal.

01;02;32;27 – 01;02;34;17
Chad
Activity or competition.

01;02;34;17 – 01;02;39;01
Chad
That you do. And so. I caught her the smart time I always had.

01;02;39;01 – 01;02;40;16
Chad
Before her, and I always go to bed after.

01;02;40;16 – 01;02;46;19
Chad
Her right? And I caught her this morning. She had her Apple Watch on. She was sleeping. I was like, Hold on a second.

01;02;46;20 – 01;02;48;16
Chad
You’re burning calories and you’re sleeping.

01;02;48;16 – 01;02;49;28
Chad
In that couch because I always take.

01;02;49;28 – 01;02;51;02
Chad
Mine off to charge it, you know?

01;02;51;13 – 01;02;59;14
Chad
Yeah, like, hold on. I say this is the biggest scam because she’s beat me right now. Yeah. And so last night, I went out and did.

01;02;59;14 – 01;03;00;15
Chad
Like a three and a half mile.

01;03;00;15 – 01;03;11;27
Chad
Walk because I can’t run at this point. I’m at this walking face. So she’s burning calories left and right. She’s doing all this stuff, and I’m just trying to snake snake by and get by.

01;03;12;15 – 01;03;13;18
Chad
But it’s it’s rough.

01;03;13;21 – 01;03;18;06
Chad
But she’s not going to win. I’ll tell you that I’ll walk all night on Sunday if I.

01;03;18;07 – 01;03;20;14
Jon
Have not going to win.

01;03;20;23 – 01;03;23;19
Jon
You strapped yourself into that treadmill and just don’t look back.

01;03;24;11 – 01;03;25;09
Jon
Just keep brown.

01;03;25;23 – 01;03;40;09
Jon
Have you heard of it? So I never had an Apple Watch Lindsay days, but I did try Woop out for a while. And of all the like sports metric gauging tools, I will say it was pretty incredible. I used it for three months.

01;03;40;10 – 01;03;50;16
Jon
Learned a lot. And then passed on to Lindsay, she learned it for three months and then we canceled the service because for me, it’s like, I don’t need to know what my metrics are for the next five years.

01;03;50;17 – 01;04;01;00
Jon
I just want to see probably every couple of years, I would do it. See what I learned over the course of a few months that I’m happy, you know, just kind of see how far off am I? Because.

01;04;02;01 – 01;04;07;09
Jon
Do you ever do this? Do you ever feel like, yeah, I always wake up at like four and then go to bed at like midnight. And then you’re.

01;04;07;09 – 01;04;07;22
Speaker 5
Like, Well.

01;04;08;02 – 01;04;23;16
Jon
You did that for like a month or two or maybe even a year, but that was like four years ago. And really, you wake up at like 4:30 and you go to bed at like ten. Like, you see, I seem to want to remember the the hardest things I’ve done, more so and claim that as what I’m

01;04;23;16 – 01;04;26;23
Jon
doing. Then the reality of what I’m doing.

01;04;27;04 – 01;04;28;13
Speaker 5
Right? Yeah.

01;04;29;03 – 01;04;39;19
Jon
I have to check myself off and it’s like, No, well, I wake up between four or five. That’s fair. Right on a daily basis. I don’t wake up at four every day. And, you know, so just kind of those things, it’s funny.

01;04;39;25 – 01;04;47;17
Jon
But the Woop helps. The Apple Watch helps kind of get that reality check of like, Oh, I felt really good today. I probably did this. And then you look and you’re like, who?

01;04;47;28 – 01;04;49;26
Jon
I was way off. You know, kind of.

01;04;50;04 – 01;04;51;13
Jon
Recalibrate that mind.

01;04;52;26 – 01;04;58;02
Chad
Get it back. It’s difficult to because I am being in sales, right? I’m not.

01;04;58;02 – 01;04;59;15
Chad
Out on the road right now.

01;04;59;16 – 01;05;01;10
Chad
Because of COVID and everything is going on.

01;05;01;29 – 01;05;03;06
Chad
I’m I’m right here.

01;05;03;17 – 01;05;09;29
Chad
In my office. You know, this is it. So I got a stand up desk because with my back, I can only really sit down.

01;05;10;13 – 01;05;13;00
Chad
For about 45 before I have to stand.

01;05;13;00 – 01;05;14;18
Chad
Up. So all of a sudden you’ll see me go.

01;05;14;29 – 01;05;17;03
Jon
Oh yeah.

01;05;17;19 – 01;05;20;12
Chad
With my standup desk. Go ahead.

01;05;21;08 – 01;05;26;02
Jon
Oh, I’m sorry, I think that because we’re not in person Zoom, it looked like I was trying to say something, so we’re good.

01;05;26;19 – 01;05;27;00
Jon
OK?

01;05;27;29 – 01;05;30;26
Chad
But yeah, it’s it’s difficult to kind of get.

01;05;30;26 – 01;05;32;12
Chad
Those metrics under control.

01;05;32;12 – 01;05;36;21
Chad
When you’re just sitting here, you’re standing here. I’m on Zoom eight hours a day.

01;05;36;21 – 01;05;40;10
Chad
You know, it’s it’s rough, but yeah.

01;05;42;08 – 01;05;42;23
Speaker 5
You know, and.

01;05;42;26 – 01;05;49;27
Jon
This one of the things I was just thinking about, like looking at your injury right now and where are you at right now in the weight scale? You want to be 2:25.

01;05;50;26 – 01;05;57;04
Chad
I am 43 to 40, 45 somewhere in there.

01;05;57;29 – 01;05;59;08
Speaker 5
Yeah, because because I.

01;05;59;08 – 01;06;13;13
Jon
Just really like our bodies, take him back every pound we carry. Right. And like, you’ve been running around for so long, like near £300, and that’s just so much compression, weight and stuff. And like you have the frame for to be handled better than most.

01;06;14;03 – 01;06;32;12
Jon
But one of the things I was thinking about is, I think when we were younger, we can get away with doing certain things more sloppily. And I think that’s where the. I really disagree with a lot of like the age based conversations, but I think that’s a caution that’s.

01;06;32;12 – 01;06;32;27
Speaker 5
Fair.

01;06;33;18 – 01;06;42;14
Jon
Is when you have a more youthful body, it is able to do more with less intentionality.

01;06;43;01 – 01;06;43;12
Speaker 5
Right?

01;06;44;01 – 01;06;59;13
Jon
That’s why the guys who are still throwing around great weight, throwing around weight, putting miles on their bodies, rolling, you know, like wrestling, doing all that jazz in their fifties and sixties. They’re very lean for reason, right? Because or at least this is this.

01;06;59;13 – 01;07;14;08
Jon
I’m playing with this idea right now. I think the guys that you see doing that, they’re really lean because over time you become less sloppy out of necessity in part. Mm hmm. But that is also just kind of the wisdom piece of learning.

01;07;14;08 – 01;07;27;14
Jon
I don’t like doing this kind of feeling crappy and just because I can, I’d rather feel good doing it. And that’s where you get leaner and more effective, in my opinion. So I guess right now I’m down to 190 195, which is way, way late.

01;07;27;14 – 01;07;39;26
Jon
I prefer to be over 200, but also I don’t use the weight as a metric for me. So much as like, am I moving the weight? I want to move in the distance I want to am. I do have the range of motion I want to do.

01;07;39;26 – 01;07;41;01
Jon
I feel good, you know.

01;07;41;03 – 01;07;41;09
Speaker 5
Like.

01;07;41;21 – 01;08;00;06
Jon
That ten days made me feel like trash, like walking hurt. You know, it wasn’t. It was even muscular soreness. I love that it was like this tendon thing. So it just became like that deal. So like, now my tire goes, I want to be, you know, consistently able to lift two to four times my body weight, depending

01;08;00;06 – 01;08;04;29
Jon
on the movement. I want to be able to do a five K under load specifically.

01;08;05;29 – 01;08;06;04
Speaker 5
And.

01;08;06;14 – 01;08;27;18
Jon
Move distance fast and like, really learn the beautiful art of jujitsu and enjoy that journey. And that’s all good and well. But with that comes this like, yeah, for me right now, especially drinking is not worth like the pleasure of drinking is not worth the inflammation and the added calories it’s putting my body bed has to then

01;08;27;18 – 01;08;40;16
Jon
process, you know, protecting the acid of sleep to the range I know I’m most effective at is now something that’s more important because I want to accomplish these other things. So maybe it’s just the priority shift over time.

01;08;41;01 – 01;08;55;13
Jon
But but I do think it’s easier to do more with less when you’re younger, and that’s no excuse not to do more with more as you age, you just have to be intentional and choose to do it. You know, when do you think about that?

01;09;00;04 – 01;09;02;00
Chad
I I think you’re absolutely right.

01;09;02;20 – 01;09;05;18
Chad
Now on a quick tangent, have you ever had moonshine?

01;09;06;12 – 01;09;06;20
Jon
Yes.

01;09;08;11 – 01;09;16;28
Chad
So I have this apple moonshine right now because I’m I go on and off kind of like a little bit of a drinking kick, maybe. Yeah.

01;09;17;10 – 01;09;18;25
Chad
I drink every so often.

01;09;18;26 – 01;09;21;24
Chad
So me and Kate just went to Tennessee.

01;09;22;09 – 01;09;23;07
Chad
For our ten year wedding.

01;09;23;07 – 01;09;28;23
Chad
Anniversary back in December. Back in December. Yeah, thanks. So we go out.

01;09;28;23 – 01;09;30;09
Chad
There and the grandparents watching.

01;09;30;09 – 01;09;33;09
Chad
The kids, so it’s just us, you know, and we go to Nashville and.

01;09;33;19 – 01;09;34;26
Chad
Grand Old Opry and.

01;09;34;26 – 01;09;36;07
Chad
We kind of go do our thing and.

01;09;36;12 – 01;09;38;01
Chad
On our own, you know, which was great.

01;09;38;06 – 01;09;38;16
Jon
Mm-Hmm.

01;09;39;02 – 01;09;56;19
Chad
Spend some time together, and I wanted to really dig into the moonshine thing, you know, because you hear so much about it, and I just had to go through it and try it. And yet. So we’re Nashville. Do you remember that that tornado, all those tornadoes that came through Kentucky in December?

01;09;57;20 – 01;10;02;06
Chad
So I’m in Nashville that night when all those.

01;10;02;16 – 01;10;03;10
Chad
200.

01;10;03;11 – 01;10;16;04
Chad
Tornadoes touched down, right? And I am from San Diego, right? We don’t have anything when it gets to 65. You know, there’s issues like on the road, people start to panic, they got.

01;10;16;04 – 01;10;17;28
Chad
Their heaters on their turtlenecks.

01;10;18;07 – 01;10;19;08
Chad
They don’t know what to do.

01;10;19;09 – 01;10;21;06
Jon
Right now you’re wearing a jacket right now, man.

01;10;22;01 – 01;10;22;04
Jon
In.

01;10;22;04 – 01;10;22;24
Chad
A jacket right now.

01;10;22;25 – 01;10;25;27
Jon
That’s like, yeah, it’s but.

01;10;26;07 – 01;10;27;11
Chad
It’s actually about to.

01;10;27;11 – 01;10;28;01
Chad
Start raining.

01;10;28;01 – 01;10;28;13
Chad
So.

01;10;29;20 – 01;10;30;23
Chad
I’m OK for today.

01;10;30;24 – 01;10;33;26
Chad
But it’s like a 65.

01;10;34;14 – 01;10;35;17
Chad
Degree rain.

01;10;35;17 – 01;10;47;23
Chad
All right, so we’re roughing it out today, but we’ll be OK. So, so we’re in Nashville and it’s it’s 3:00 in the morning. I get woke up to like.

01;10;47;23 – 01;10;48;24
Chad
Sirens going.

01;10;48;24 – 01;10;52;09
Chad
Off in the streets and I’m like, What is going on?

01;10;52;10 – 01;10;54;23
Chad
You know, we’re right on Broadway in Nashville.

01;10;55;09 – 01;10;55;23
Jon
Where all.

01;10;55;23 – 01;10;56;02
Chad
Those.

01;10;56;02 – 01;10;56;28
Chad
Bars are.

01;10;57;01 – 01;11;05;02
Chad
Right. And 3:00 in the morning, all these sirens going off, I figure just police, it’s ambulances, you know.

01;11;05;02 – 01;11;06;05
Chad
People are hammered and.

01;11;06;05 – 01;11;20;12
Chad
They’re getting picked up, right? I look outside there’s like tornado warnings. I’m getting all these notifications on my phone to get to the basement now. Am I looking outside the palm trees? You’re like this, you know.

01;11;20;26 – 01;11;21;29
Chad
Park benches are.

01;11;21;29 – 01;11;31;18
Chad
Flying down the street. Yeah. And my wife is sleeping and I’m like, All right, do I want a week to wake the sleeping bear?

01;11;31;23 – 01;11;35;21
Chad
Or do I wish we’re on the sixth floor in Nashville?

01;11;36;13 – 01;11;43;10
Chad
What do I do? You know, I don’t know. And like, do you? Do you hide under the bed? Do you jump in the bathtub? What do you do?

01;11;43;11 – 01;11;43;19
Jon
Yeah.

01;11;44;17 – 01;11;45;26
Chad
So they’re saying, get to.

01;11;45;26 – 01;11;46;25
Chad
The basement and.

01;11;47;08 – 01;11;48;20
Chad
Steal park benches.

01;11;48;28 – 01;12;00;10
Chad
Flying down the street. And I’m like, Holy cow. Like, those are heavy benches. They’re flying down the street. What do I do? We’re in this massive hotel. We’re on the sixth floor. My wife’s sleeping is 3:00 in the morning.

01;12;02;03 – 01;12;17;29
Chad
Another breaking point in my life, I’m like, this could be it. You know, I’m going to get taken away by this tornado. Here we go. I sit by the window and I’m like. On all morning, just looking out the window, staring out the window.

01;12;18;01 – 01;12;33;19
Chad
This is it, yeah. But to jump back to the moonshine thing that was just so we wake up in the morning. 200 tornadoes take down. They take out like. It was the biggest storm in Kentucky history. It wipes out.

01;12;33;19 – 01;12;34;11
Chad
Hundreds of.

01;12;34;11 – 01;12;38;23
Chad
Homes, I mean, completely flattened these homes. It was just that it was awful.

01;12;39;18 – 01;12;49;23
Jon
And real quick, just because I think we breezed past something that we shouldn’t have you decided after analyzing the situation and doing your risk analysis.

01;12;50;15 – 01;12;51;06
Jon
That it was.

01;12;51;06 – 01;12;57;16
Jon
Better to stare out the window at this significant storm than risk waking up, Kate?

01;12;58;29 – 01;13;01;15
Jon
Absolutely. Well, I think.

01;13;02;25 – 01;13;04;24
Chad
I’m sitting there, I got a water bottle.

01;13;05;11 – 01;13;08;01
Jon
Yeah. Like, well, interesting.

01;13;08;21 – 01;13;16;24
Chad
Because you see the movie, you know, like the tornado movies, I’ve never seen a tornado. Like, what is it? What do they look like? Are they that big? Like, are they going to pick up.

01;13;16;24 – 01;13;17;15
Chad
A car or a.

01;13;17;15 – 01;13;28;01
Chad
Cow? I mean, what is that tornado movie where it picks up the cow in a cow is like a I guess it’s really a deal. Some like waiting to see if I can see the tornado. I mean, this massive hotel.

01;13;28;13 – 01;13;32;12
Chad
Mm-Hmm. It wasn’t worth it. You know, if I saw the tornado.

01;13;32;13 – 01;13;33;11
Chad
I just grab her and.

01;13;33;11 – 01;13;37;29
Chad
We take off going down the stairs to the basement. But I was on watch.

01;13;38;03 – 01;13;38;15
Chad
The rest the.

01;13;38;16 – 01;13;39;28
Chad
Night. I couldn’t go back to bed. It was.

01;13;40;20 – 01;13;42;15
Chad
It was worrisome for us, for a San.

01;13;42;15 – 01;13;43;11
Chad
Diego native.

01;13;44;06 – 01;13;45;20
Jon
Yeah. So you decided.

01;13;46;00 – 01;13;46;06
Speaker 5
I’ll.

01;13;46;06 – 01;13;54;07
Jon
Play it close to the vest if I see a tornado? Well, well, you know, sprint down stairs, but otherwise I’d rather risk a bench hitting me than wake her up.

01;13;54;22 – 01;13;55;02
Jon
Yeah.

01;13;55;13 – 01;14;07;23
Jon
That’s good. I feel the same way about Lindsey, so we’re I’m in the same boat and it’s just, I, you know, I don’t want us to walk past that because it’s pretty hilarious and true. It’s something that I would not want to engage in, either.

01;14;08;22 – 01;14;11;14
Jon
Yeah. So back to the moonshine.

01;14;13;02 – 01;14;24;11
Chad
So I got this apple pie moonshine, and every so often I just get a little shot of it and I’ll sip it. It takes me like.

01;14;24;11 – 01;14;25;08
Chad
An hour to set.

01;14;25;08 – 01;14;28;18
Chad
This thing, right? It is phenomenal.

01;14;28;19 – 01;14;30;18
Chad
I don’t know if you tried any at all.

01;14;31;09 – 01;14;49;13
Chad
I got an apple pie. I got a pickle and the pickle thing. My my mom. I got it from my mom. She’s like a big pickle fiend. So I got this pickle moonshine for my mom. And then this eggnog moonshine that we sent over to to Kate’s mom and dad.

01;14;49;13 – 01;15;04;18
Chad
But. It was phenomenal, but I’m on this kick right now for moonshine, where, hey, I’ll just have a little shot of it, like every few days, I’ll just have this one and I’ll just sip on it and it is the most phenomenal thing out there.

01;15;04;22 – 01;15;08;05
Chad
Obviously, I can’t. I can’t plug this in now because you’re not drinking this year, but.

01;15;10;13 – 01;15;26;16
Jon
I’ll try it. So I had a really special experience, I’ve had a few opportunities to have, like legit made in the basement moonshine. And so when I was in South Carolina, that was one of those times we had like ten flavors at our disposal.

01;15;27;02 – 01;15;34;06
Jon
So it was pretty cool. They’re all pretty good. The problem was I couldn’t drink them for like family events, you know.

01;15;34;06 – 01;15;34;14
Jon
Like.

01;15;34;24 – 01;15;41;14
Jon
I wasn’t going to have moonshine at a family event. So it was like when the guys got together, you could have some shine and then go to sleep, that type of thing.

01;15;42;04 – 01;15;43;23
Jon
So like because it was.

01;15;43;23 – 01;15;56;09
Jon
Like not the Tennessee moonshine in the bottle. Like where you buy it in the mason jar in a liquor store, right? No, this was homegrown stuff like white lightning, you know.

01;15;56;24 – 01;15;58;01
Chad
Rubbing alcohol.

01;15;58;05 – 01;15;58;17
Jon
Yeah.

01;15;58;27 – 01;16;11;07
Jon
Yeah. Yeah, you wouldn’t. I wouldn’t sip this. You had to mix it with you. You had to mix it. It was surprisingly smooth, but so strong. Oh, my goodness. So I understand. You know, one of the things I don’t mind talking about it.

01;16;11;07 – 01;16;11;18
Speaker 5
But like.

01;16;11;27 – 01;16;26;06
Jon
For myself, I just realized I really have always liked drinking. I start really young and I took my 70 days off to get that last contract done. And you know, that was a big deal for me to decide, like, I’m not going drink at all for the next 70 days.

01;16;28;23 – 01;16;38;18
Jon
So I ended up loving it, right? I ended up loving the freedom from ever thinking about drinking period, right? Or like when the habit would kick in, just knowing it wasn’t even a debate of how much or whatever.

01;16;38;18 – 01;16;53;03
Jon
It’s just now like it’s not on the table. So that kind of muscle grew and I came back and I felt great, and I really enjoyed having some beverages and it was pretty good until like the last week of the year, you know, with New Year’s and all the holidays and a budget company and everything kind of

01;16;53;03 – 01;17;04;10
Jon
slipped back into like a few days in a row having a fair number of drinks as like, you know, I’m not doing this crap. I have so much that I feel I’m supposed to do this next year. I don’t even want the distraction of it.

01;17;04;20 – 01;17;17;16
Jon
And I do think over the course of a year, it will rewrite the relationship such that I look forward to, you know, kicking the feet up, having a drink of moonshine with you. I look forward to those types of events, and I think that that’s the point of it.

01;17;17;16 – 01;17;30;27
Jon
It’s supposed to be like this enhancer that helps elevate the natural, already good feeling vibes that are going on with people. You’re in communion by community with it, enjoying company of and. And I do look forward to that.

01;17;30;27 – 01;17;40;26
Jon
And I know that there’s a few times this year that I would love to do that. Mike, I have a buddy coming back from Germany that I’d really like to do that this year and things like that. But it’s not.

01;17;40;26 – 01;17;41;10
Chad
Worth.

01;17;42;05 – 01;17;48;27
Jon
The capacity and the discipline that this is going to give me for the rest of my life to call this to set this year out.

01;17;49;03 – 01;17;49;15
Speaker 5
You know.

01;17;50;00 – 01;18;02;15
Jon
So if I lose any weight over that choice, then it’s probably a good thing and we can choose next year, you know? So I’m pretty excited about it. I think it’s good, but I’m definitely not adverse to it.

01;18;02;23 – 01;18;06;00
Jon
It’s just I realized I need to do this game right. I need.

01;18;06;06 – 01;18;06;08
Speaker 5
To.

01;18;07;05 – 01;18;08;19
Jon
Saddle that pony, so to speak.

01;18;08;19 – 01;18;14;13
Chad
So that’s you know what else? You know, what else is interesting is. When we when.

01;18;14;13 – 01;18;14;24
Chad
I first.

01;18;14;24 – 01;18;18;10
Chad
Had kids, I remember Kate’s dad coming to me and tell me a.

01;18;18;10 – 01;18;19;04
Chad
Story.

01;18;19;05 – 01;18;24;20
Chad
Of when the kids were little. Mom was out of town.

01;18;24;26 – 01;18;25;23
Chad
For work, and.

01;18;25;23 – 01;18;29;05
Chad
It was just him, and, you know, he was having a.

01;18;29;05 – 01;18;29;27
Chad
Few beers very.

01;18;29;27 – 01;18;31;22
Chad
Casually, you know, as they’re cooking.

01;18;31;22 – 01;18;33;01
Chad
Or barbecuing or whatever was.

01;18;33;01 – 01;18;34;06
Chad
Doing and someone.

01;18;34;07 – 01;18;34;24
Chad
Got hurt.

01;18;36;09 – 01;18;49;18
Chad
And he was stuck. You know, he was in that decision once again. Do I get everyone in the car and get them to the hospital? Do I call 911? Do I grab a neighbor? What do I do? Right?

01;18;49;29 – 01;18;53;08
Chad
And that really stuck with me my entire life.

01;18;54;01 – 01;18;55;26
Chad
You know, whereas hey.

01;18;56;05 – 01;19;02;29
Chad
I need to be aware and be able to function in case something happens, you know? And it’s a.

01;19;02;29 – 01;19;03;25
Chad
Very serious.

01;19;03;25 – 01;19;06;03
Chad
Thing, you know, because you see it all the time.

01;19;06;03 – 01;19;07;02
Chad
Or you hear about it where.

01;19;07;02 – 01;19;09;06
Chad
Hey, dad or mom.

01;19;09;06 – 01;19;09;24
Chad
Or grandma or.

01;19;09;24 – 01;19;12;00
Chad
Somebody was home and.

01;19;12;00 – 01;19;13;14
Chad
You know, they’re having a few drinks very.

01;19;13;14 – 01;19;30;10
Chad
Casually. But do you make the decision to get them off if something happens? It doesn’t have to be hospital related. It could be something else related, right? But how do you make that decision if you’re unable to do so because you’ve had a few.

01;19;30;10 – 01;19;32;09
Chad
Drinks and aren’t able to drive right.

01;19;32;09 – 01;19;35;14
Chad
Or you make the decision to drive when you shouldn’t be? Right?

01;19;36;14 – 01;19;37;11
Chad
It’s a very.

01;19;38;10 – 01;19;40;05
Chad
You know, you come to this point.

01;19;40;05 – 01;19;41;08
Chad
In the road where, hey.

01;19;41;17 – 01;19;44;20
Chad
You know, these are big boy, big girl decisions you got to make.

01;19;45;05 – 01;19;45;17
Speaker 5
Yeah.

01;19;46;02 – 01;19;47;22
Chad
And it hasn’t been worth it.

01;19;48;24 – 01;19;53;13
Jon
And that is the bottom line, right? Like, it’s just not worth it. one of the things I told myself because I.

01;19;53;13 – 01;19;53;28
Chad
Realized.

01;19;53;28 – 01;19;54;27
Speaker 5
It and.

01;19;54;27 – 01;20;09;25
Jon
I remember this from early on, like if I wanted, if I was going to watch a movie with people that they wanted to watch. But I thought it was a stupid movie like, you know, I remember if, like Jackass on MTV, like, I never liked that show, but if I was just other deeds like people back then

01;20;09;25 – 01;20;21;03
Jon
who want to watch that show. I was drinking because if I drank enough, I could not be miserable sitting there watching it. So that created like this habit of I allowed aspects of my life to be tenable, tolerable to me.

01;20;21;03 – 01;20;34;25
Jon
If I was drinking, I could enjoy them. If I was drinking right, I could make spending that time feel OK. So like, one of the things I’ve done is just promise myself I’m going to create and live a life that is more valuable.

01;20;35;21 – 01;20;52;12
Jon
Like that is so in line with what I would love to be doing in like creating value that I don’t want to risk taking from it by drinking especially consistently. You know, so it’s changed the equation because it’s like, Well, I don’t watch stupid movies I think are stupid anymore, right?

01;20;52;13 – 01;21;00;29
Jon
I’ll just be a, hey, you know, watch that whenever you want. I if I do that, I’m going to be miserable the whole time. I’m going to be bored. Can we find something that we both want to do?

01;21;01;04 – 01;21;04;10
Jon
You know, so like doing those types of exchanges.

01;21;04;10 – 01;21;04;22
Chad
Or.

01;21;05;18 – 01;21;18;12
Jon
Just changing how we live and stuff has made it so that a lot of that temptation from boredom has gone away. Right. Because now we’re doing things like jujitsu as a family and we have, you know, I’m teaching the German gamer how to play chess.

01;21;18;13 – 01;21;36;10
Jon
And, you know, we do all these fun things together. So it’s like it’s it’s changed everything. And one of the things that really struck me is like, like you said, someone gets hurt. Are you going to accept the risk in a degraded state to risk more injury and loss of life, to try and solve a problem because

01;21;36;10 – 01;21;55;15
Jon
you’ve compromised yourself? Or are you going to remove that issue? You know, like when I like next year, when I envision having drinks, it’s going to be like in the evenings after supper, you know, kids are going down and the risk of needing to do something is very low and I’m hanging out with a buddy or some

01;21;55;15 – 01;22;07;23
Jon
family and we’re having a good time. You know, that’s like that to me. Sounds fun. What doesn’t sound funny? More like what you said? Barbecuing during the day, someone falls off the Tree House or the Play House? And what do you do like that doesn’t?

01;22;08;12 – 01;22;20;22
Jon
That doesn’t make me feel good, and I don’t know if you’ve noticed this. I bet you have with your kiddos, but I do not challenge some cool things to happen. But Jeremiah ran his first five K with me on the property.

01;22;22;07 – 01;22;42;28
Jon
Jeremiah and Gabriel have done five K plus tours on the assault bike multiple times in a row, like multiple times each. All the boys come out and lift with me. You know, those things feel really good, right? When someone says something about, you know, disparaging to our family and silliness, they all get responsive about it, right?

01;22;42;28 – 01;22;47;23
Jon
They all want to protect what they think is honorable. Like that feels good. I’ll tell you what doesn’t feel good.

01;22;49;17 – 01;22;50;12
Jon
Let me tell you, it doesn’t.

01;22;50;12 – 01;22;50;23
Jon
Feel good.

01;22;51;14 – 01;22;51;26
Speaker 5
When.

01;22;52;28 – 01;23;00;05
Jon
When they want to pretend like when you’re drinking a beer or like a margarita or something and they want to pretend like they are because they see it all the time.

01;23;00;26 – 01;23;01;07
Speaker 5
Or when you.

01;23;01;07 – 01;23;12;27
Jon
Open a sparkling water in the car, they ask, That’s beer, which I’ve never done. But the fact that they associate the sound with dad must be having a beer while I’m opening a sparkling water in the car, right?

01;23;13;07 – 01;23;26;06
Jon
That feeling doesn’t feel good. So it’s like on the one side, there’s all these things that feel great. On the other side, there’s these things. It’s like, Man, they’re just seeing this too. They’re seeing this regularly enough to associate certain ideas or to try to emulate them, right?

01;23;26;06 – 01;23;37;14
Jon
Because kids copy what they see. So when I see them reading on the couch, that makes me really happy. You know, that means they’re seeing Lindsey and I read a lot. It’s like those types of things are good.

01;23;37;14 – 01;23;51;08
Jon
The activities are good, but like when I see them, what asked me if I want to be a which they’ve not done in a long time now, but when they were doing that or wanting to copy me in that or, you know, asking those types of questions, that was a great mirror.

01;23;51;08 – 01;24;02;21
Jon
Also, I’m like, you know, this just isn’t worth it, right? Like, it’s not worth it for me. And it also goes to like. There’s too much to live for and be intentional, and it really thrive and enjoy and.

01;24;04;29 – 01;24;22;19
Jon
The is engineer life to be worth living more than escaping. Right, and that’s kind of what the goals become, let’s engineer life that’s so worth living that there’s no desire to escape it and then and only then let’s enhance it as appropriate, if at all, you know?

01;24;22;20 – 01;24;30;29
Jon
So that’s kind of part of the journey and the excitement of this year, plus some pretty stellar projects that are going on. So that’s kind of neat.

01;24;31;18 – 01;24;32;11
Jon
It’s so exciting.

01;24;33;15 – 01;24;48;27
Jon
But. Yeah, it’s not Adobe down on it in that Apple moonshine does sound good, but it’s kind of thought process behind it. Right? It’s not like some self-righteous thing. It’s like now I’m just I’m really at the point man where I’m willing to do anything to get where I want to go.

01;24;49;29 – 01;24;53;05
Jon
You know. Which feels nice.

01;24;54;17 – 01;24;57;18
Jon
Yeah. That’s so exciting. Yeah.

01;24;58;03 – 01;24;58;27
Chad
So lately.

01;24;59;23 – 01;25;01;04
Chad
I would say over the course of the.

01;25;01;04 – 01;25;12;28
Chad
Last two months, every single night dad does the dishes and dad does, he cleans the kitchen. Right? So Kate, right now on that on the down low.

01;25;13;11 – 01;25;15;07
Chad
Is pregnant with number four.

01;25;15;25 – 01;25;15;26
Jon
Oh.

01;25;17;13 – 01;25;19;01
Jon
Congratulations. Real quick.

01;25;19;26 – 01;25;20;22
Chad
Don’t tell anybody.

01;25;21;29 – 01;25;24;11
Jon
Okay? Would you remember the context?

01;25;24;11 – 01;25;24;21
Jon
So that’s.

01;25;24;21 – 01;25;27;09
Jon
Good. I did congratulate.

01;25;27;09 – 01;25;28;05
Jon
Regulations.

01;25;29;06 – 01;25;43;25
Chad
Yeah, man. Thanks. So I have been. Very keen on helping her right with number four, and I’ve decided that it’s my.

01;25;43;25 – 01;25;44;11
Chad
Duty and.

01;25;44;11 – 01;25;50;19
Chad
Responsibility to do the dishes in the kitchen and make sure everything’s clean because I want to.

01;25;50;19 – 01;25;51;10
Chad
Ensure that.

01;25;51;10 – 01;25;53;11
Chad
When those children wake up in the morning, they.

01;25;53;11 – 01;25;54;04
Chad
Deserve.

01;25;54;12 – 01;26;01;04
Chad
To wake up to a clean, happy, ready to get after the day type of environment, right?

01;26;01;07 – 01;26;01;18
Jon
Mm hmm.

01;26;02;02 – 01;26;06;10
Chad
And so now the kids know that, hey, when.

01;26;06;10 – 01;26;07;09
Chad
They’re going up to brush your.

01;26;07;09 – 01;26;07;22
Chad
Teeth.

01;26;07;22 – 01;26;08;21
Chad
And get ready for bed.

01;26;09;15 – 01;26;27;22
Chad
Daddy’s doing the dishes. Daddy’s doing the kitchen, right? And it’s I’m glad that I can show both met that. Hey, you know, help, mom. You know, mom is going through a tough time right now at twelve weeks or 13 weeks.

01;26;27;22 – 01;26;40;16
Chad
Whatever it is, she’s sick all the time, right? So she’s thrown up here and there because she’s sick and she’s just going through the motions of the pregnancy, right? Mm hmm. And I need to be able to be there and help out.

01;26;40;16 – 01;26;41;10
Chad
Wherever I.

01;26;41;10 – 01;26;47;02
Chad
Can. And if that means, you know, throwing that that kitchen.

01;26;47;02 – 01;26;48;24
Chad
Whatever wardrobe on.

01;26;49;10 – 01;26;51;07
Chad
You know, and getting.

01;26;51;07 – 01;26;51;24
Chad
To work.

01;26;52;01 – 01;26;56;03
Chad
Then that’s what I got to do. Obviously, I would never tell Kate this.

01;26;56;03 – 01;26;57;04
Chad
Because I never have.

01;26;57;07 – 01;27;08;01
Chad
And I don’t think I ever would. But she knows now that I do the dishes and I do the kitchen. I won’t tell her what it’s for, but I just always do it and just don’t say anything.

01;27;11;10 – 01;27;11;22
Jon
Don’t worry.

01;27;11;23 – 01;27;14;07
Jon
Complete confidentiality between you, me and the internet.

01;27;18;08 – 01;27;24;10
Chad
But yeah, it’s it’s nice as a form of example, to to show the children.

01;27;24;10 – 01;27;25;10
Chad
Everything circles.

01;27;25;10 – 01;27;32;22
Chad
Right back to the children, right? And those guiding principles and building blocks for the kids and help getting them off on.

01;27;32;22 – 01;27;33;03
Chad
The right.

01;27;33;03 – 01;27;33;19
Chad
Step.

01;27;33;26 – 01;27;34;20
Chad
You know, for.

01;27;34;22 – 01;27;36;28
Chad
Their lives, it’s so important.

01;27;37;22 – 01;27;49;02
Jon
It is. And there’s two thoughts there. one, I need to thank you because you’ve encouraged me. I broke up a dog fight and broke it, broke the knuckle on my left hand. You can still see the bruising. Pretty good.

01;27;49;07 – 01;27;49;18
Jon
Oh.

01;27;49;28 – 01;27;57;18
Jon
And cut the cut it to the bone. I actually thought it cut the tendons because like, look how it’s like this knuckles like bent way up, how it’s going to be.

01;27;57;29 – 01;27;58;08
Jon
Yeah.

01;27;59;21 – 01;28;01;06
Speaker 5
Yeah, exactly. Well, this.

01;28;01;06 – 01;28;17;14
Jon
one doesn’t bother me, but this one felt like, why is it so arched? You know, instead of straight, it’s like an s on my finger that in all the wrong directions. So but then I discovered after a few weeks like, Oh, the knuckles just broken, which is funny because that made me feel better because I’d rather a

01;28;17;14 – 01;28;20;08
Jon
neck will be broken then attendant, right? Because.

01;28;21;03 – 01;28;21;15
Speaker 5
Goodness.

01;28;22;01 – 01;28;39;17
Jon
I just feel like that heals better. But I just today for the first time because like my gym will be if it’s five degrees outside like it was this morning when I worked out and was doing lunges through the snow just to pour salt on your your rough 65 degree rainy day.

01;28;41;24 – 01;28;42;12
Chad
Like, I’ve.

01;28;42;12 – 01;28;51;03
Jon
Not had gloves. I’ve had to just like the gloves on the bar to grab it, which is the only thing I don’t like about the cold because you’ll get frostbite. Otherwise, like I couldn’t fit the glove over my knuckle.

01;28;51;03 – 01;29;04;03
Jon
Today was the first time since the bite. So that was super cool and by. I say all that to say You’ve encouraged me. Typically, I do the same. Lindsay is an amazing cook and she blesses our whole family with great meals.

01;29;04;03 – 01;29;04;09
Speaker 5
And.

01;29;04;28 – 01;29;18;06
Jon
She’s been picking up extra slack on the dishes because my hand had a huge laceration in it, so I couldn’t get it wet the same. But now that that cuts heal, that I can do dishes with a fractured knuckle still.

01;29;18;06 – 01;29;33;03
Jon
So I’m going to get in there and then just sharing a little thing. I think you’ll like this and you’ll probably do with your kids if you don’t already. Once I heard it, I made it a house rule, so I was talking with the great and powerful amazing Troy quarterly.

01;29;33;03 – 01;29;48;28
Jon
I’ll have to have him on the show. And he was talking about how he doesn’t let his kids eat at the table, but no one eats until mom sits down. And then they’ll pray and they’ll eat because, like, you know, kids, you serve them up and they all want to just dove in at the table and say

01;29;48;28 – 01;30;02;24
Jon
, Oh, we will pray real quick or whatever. And then like, they’re just all like little locusts and they start eating. So he makes them just wait. They just have to sit and wait until mom can sit down because, you know, typically also whoever makes the meals is the last to sit.

01;30;02;28 – 01;30;16;26
Jon
It’s just kind of how it goes. So we’ve implemented that and I love it because now, man, those boys will brawl. If someone decides to take a bite before mom sitting down, they will like it, baby.

01;30;17;27 – 01;30;18;08
Jon
Yeah.

01;30;18;25 – 01;30;21;04
Jon
Yeah. Mom’s not sitting down yet. You put.

01;30;21;04 – 01;30;21;19
Jon
Your fork.

01;30;21;19 – 01;30;22;00
Speaker 5
Down.

01;30;22;13 – 01;30;34;23
Jon
And if someone violates it, I make everyone stand up until mom comes back. I can tell we because I’ll be helping her until we come sit down. But if I get to sit down before her because she wants to do something, we all wait until she sits down.

01;30;35;04 – 01;30;46;20
Jon
And then we get after it. And that’s been such one, just a good discipline and just a little tiny practice of self-denial and awareness and gratitude to her, but to it’s just it’s a fun thing. So I thought you’d appreciate that.

01;30;48;20 – 01;30;49;29
Chad
I really appreciate.

01;30;49;29 – 01;30;52;21
Chad
It because there’s so much going on over.

01;30;52;21 – 01;30;53;15
Chad
Here, and I’m sure.

01;30;54;02 – 01;30;55;04
Chad
You can appreciate the fact.

01;30;55;04 – 01;30;56;03
Chad
That everything it’s.

01;30;56;04 – 01;31;00;27
Chad
Just busy all the time, and we don’t sit down.

01;31;00;27 – 01;31;02;14
Chad
As much for dinner as I.

01;31;02;14 – 01;31;07;07
Chad
Would like, right? It’s always feels like it’s on the go, right? So I had practice.

01;31;07;07 – 01;31;08;04
Chad
Wrestling practice.

01;31;08;04 – 01;31;08;23
Chad
Till seven.

01;31;08;23 – 01;31;09;07
Chad
30.

01;31;09;07 – 01;31;12;25
Chad
Last night, right? And by that time, Kate and the.

01;31;12;25 – 01;31;13;04
Chad
Girls.

01;31;13;04 – 01;31;24;22
Chad
38, and then I come back, you know, and we’ll dish out the food and sit down and eat. But we really need to get back in the mindset of, Hey, let’s sit down as a family.

01;31;25;07 – 01;31;25;16
Jon
Hmm.

01;31;25;23 – 01;31;28;11
Chad
Let’s pray. Let’s I want to hear about.

01;31;28;11 – 01;31;36;28
Chad
Everyone’s days and just really enjoy each other’s company. Right? Because I feel like that’s the only time of solitude.

01;31;36;28 – 01;31;38;00
Chad
You know, for for everybody.

01;31;38;00 – 01;31;38;21
Chad
In their day.

01;31;39;05 – 01;31;39;21
Jon
Without.

01;31;39;21 – 01;31;40;00
Speaker 5
Yeah.

01;31;40;00 – 01;31;51;07
Jon
And and we’re in a new season now. We were doing that seven days week for a while when I was working remotely and before we had any evening commitments and it was awesome. But like now, that’s just not reality, right?

01;31;51;07 – 01;31;53;24
Jon
We have jujitsu that goes from five till 7:30.

01;31;53;24 – 01;31;54;26
Speaker 5
And we have.

01;31;55;00 – 01;32;04;26
Jon
And that’s twice a week. And then we have a family outing on Wednesday. So it’s just different. But we do protect Monday. Saturday Sunday night.

01;32;04;26 – 01;32;06;09
Speaker 5
Dinners are.

01;32;06;17 – 01;32;17;20
Jon
No phones, no technology, no distractions, meals, being together as human beings. That and protection, that’s been good. We’ve we’ve had to adjust and we’re being more protective of our Sundays to recharge and be family.

01;32;18;06 – 01;32;18;24
Speaker 5
And.

01;32;19;29 – 01;32;34;11
Jon
Friday nights our family movie night. So that’s it’s family time. It’s protected, it’s just not around a table. We all make pizza and sit around the TV. But but to your point, life is going to just speed up and not allow the time to catch your breath.

01;32;34;11 – 01;32;38;13
Jon
So it’s like there is there has to be an intentionality in forcing that.

01;32;39;01 – 01;32;39;07
Speaker 5
To.

01;32;39;07 – 01;32;50;15
Jon
Have it, you know, because otherwise it won’t give it to us. But it’s only because then you actually get to be with your kiddos and you’re, you know, better half and all that and such such a rich way.

01;32;50;20 – 01;33;03;16
Jon
I will say after seasons of not doing that, after time doing that for a while or not getting more relaxed when you tighten that discipline back up, it can feel a little awkward the first couple of times as you like, right?

01;33;03;29 – 01;33;06;02
Jon
TV’s been put away, the phones put.

01;33;06;02 – 01;33;06;15
Speaker 5
Away.

01;33;08;13 – 01;33;16;05
Jon
Kind of sitting there, huh? And then you get back into a rhythm of being human beings. So it’s fun and.

01;33;18;03 – 01;33;22;21
Chad
There are. Intentional, intentional living, it’s extremely important.

01;33;23;17 – 01;33;41;04
Jon
It is it’s the crux of things, and you know, right now, the theory slowed down a little bit different episodes every week, and I’ve intentionally allowed it to go to roughly biweekly right now. And that’s because I’m working on a pretty cool project that I’ll be reviewing here in a little bit.

01;33;41;11 – 01;33;42;22
Jon
So anticipation.

01;33;42;24 – 01;33;43;15
Speaker 5
Whew.

01;33;44;11 – 01;33;59;12
Jon
But you know, it’s good stuff. And I was thinking about this the other day because there’s a heavy like like philosophy, practical like philosophy and theory type of flavor to the project I’m working on as a big proponent of a component of it.

01;34;00;02 – 01;34;18;03
Jon
And I have a partner in what we’re doing, and we’re so like minded on like these ideas, like the ones you are talking about, right? Like discipline, consistency, intentionality, you know, asking questions, paying attention, all that stuff. And like, I’m a person of faith.

01;34;18;23 – 01;34;39;05
Jon
And I was thinking about this piece. I just want to play with it a little bit for you. But like when I look at my faith, I it’s faith is my source of peace, courage and strength. And it’s a gift freely, given that inspires me to so much more action than I would ever do without it.

01;34;39;25 – 01;34;58;17
Jon
It’s a gift in my mind. What it’s not is. Some claim to like some form of superiority in any context. Right? Like, it’s not some moral superiority piece, it’s not some judgmental piece. It doesn’t make me want to go in like, preach to people.

01;34;58;25 – 01;35;17;27
Jon
It makes me want to live a life that is so real that it’s like winsome and it’s attractive, you know? And so many high speed dudes I know are so burned off by this idea, by the idea of like, faith or, you know, I’m not a huge fan of religion.

01;35;17;27 – 01;35;19;16
Jon
I think there’s a distinction we don’t have to go into.

01;35;19;17 – 01;35;20;20
Speaker 5
But like that whole.

01;35;20;20 – 01;35;22;15
Jon
Conversation turned so many people.

01;35;22;15 – 01;35;22;25
Speaker 5
Off.

01;35;23;19 – 01;35;38;01
Jon
And I can’t help but think it’s because tied to it is a bunch of human error and cheap moral superiority complexes. And in, I don’t know, I’ve been thinking about that the last couple of days as like, you know, I do all this stuff.

01;35;38;01 – 01;35;56;03
Jon
I’m up at pretty early and I go to bed pretty late and I demand a lot and try to do better because it’s the response I want to give to this amazing gift I’ve received. And it gives me peace and contentment in the now, even while I work to a future that scares me and is inspiring and

01;35;56;03 – 01;36;10;28
Jon
exciting. So one, I just wanted to say that to make it public and then to. I want to see what you think about that because I know, I know you’re also a man of faith and we both typically we’re kind of closer to the vest, right?

01;36;12;25 – 01;36;23;23
Jon
So I just want to see what you think about that, especially so being in California and some of the things that can go. In that type of environment as well this hour that hits you, and if you have anything.

01;36;25;10 – 01;36;32;25
Chad
I think I think for me specifically. I as I get older, I am becoming.

01;36;32;25 – 01;36;33;16
Chad
More and more.

01;36;33;28 – 01;36;35;23
Chad
Keen and close to the Lord.

01;36;35;29 – 01;36;36;22
Jon
Right? Mm hmm.

01;36;37;18 – 01;36;40;21
Chad
I hold that relationship that I have with him personally.

01;36;40;22 – 01;36;41;20
Jon
Very close.

01;36;43;24 – 01;36;47;02
Chad
You know, growing up without when I was a baby. Right, right.

01;36;47;28 – 01;36;48;17
Chad
My parents were.

01;36;48;17 – 01;36;49;19
Jon
Catholic. Right.

01;36;50;03 – 01;36;51;12
Chad
And we it kind of.

01;36;51;12 – 01;36;52;04
Chad
Morphed.

01;36;52;04 – 01;36;57;10
Chad
Over the years to kind of a non-denominational type of environment, right? And obviously, the.

01;36;57;11 – 01;36;58;13
Chad
Religion versus kind.

01;36;58;13 – 01;37;03;23
Chad
Of relationship aspect is a little bit different. We have to go into that. But my relationship.

01;37;06;05 – 01;37;07;18
Chad
Is she ever changing?

01;37;07;27 – 01;37;13;05
Chad
Right? And I think that change is creating strength and creating a close.

01;37;15;14 – 01;37;17;05
Chad
And a very necessary.

01;37;17;20 – 01;37;28;14
Chad
Close being that I am having. So I’ll give you an example when I was deployed. I I joined.

01;37;28;21 – 01;37;29;21
Chad
The church choir.

01;37;30;20 – 01;37;36;02
Chad
Right? I am. I mean, a singer. Can you imagine me sitting up there with a microphone singing?

01;37;36;12 – 01;37;37;25
Jon
It’s making me feel happy inside.

01;37;40;18 – 01;37;54;11
Chad
So I’m I’m up there. I’m like, You know what? I had a calling. I’m telling you, I had a calling. And this is this is what kind of help push me through. You know, those awful dark times, right of being in awful environments?

01;37;55;02 – 01;37;58;12
Chad
And I was like, You know what? I need to join the choir.

01;37;59;09 – 01;38;00;12
Chad
So I got another.

01;38;00;25 – 01;38;01;17
Chad
Another one.

01;38;01;17 – 01;38;02;08
Chad
Of my peers.

01;38;03;08 – 01;38;13;16
Chad
And I was like, Hey, what do you think about this? He’s like, Are you kidding? You know, like, let’s do it, you know? So we both go. We both go.

01;38;13;16 – 01;38;14;20
Chad
To the first practice.

01;38;14;20 – 01;38;15;02
Chad
Before.

01;38;15;02 – 01;38;16;19
Chad
The before the first Sunday.

01;38;17;13 – 01;38;22;26
Chad
We’re holding microphones and we’re like singing, like trying to figure this whole thing out, right?

01;38;22;26 – 01;38;23;25
Chad
We don’t have the lyrics.

01;38;23;25 – 01;38;39;29
Chad
You know, we’re like doing our thing by the end of it, you know, we were getting plaques. We were having all these additional people from our units join because of it. And it was just out of a weird thought of, Hey, we need to join the choir.

01;38;39;29 – 01;38;55;21
Chad
I don’t know why. I don’t know what for, but it’s going to come in time. And that alone has not only strengthened me as a person, but look at how many more people have all of a sudden started showing up because they wanted to see us up there sing.

01;38;56;17 – 01;38;57;24
Chad
It had nothing to do with.

01;38;57;24 – 01;38;59;13
Chad
Church or service or anything.

01;38;59;18 – 01;39;09;27
Chad
They just wanted to come to see us because they heard we were singing right. So they come, and all of a sudden now they’re coming every week. And now all of a sudden, it’s not because of us being up there.

01;39;10;07 – 01;39;16;08
Chad
But they appreciated not only the community, but what they were actually hearing. And it was a lot deeper than they thought.

01;39;16;08 – 01;39;17;07
Chad
On the surface.

01;39;18;01 – 01;39;28;24
Chad
You know, now all of a sudden, I get back here into San Diego and now my community. Now I’m like, OK, hold on. I’m getting a calling to join this, this megachurch and the.

01;39;28;24 – 01;39;29;25
Chad
Choir or.

01;39;29;28 – 01;39;31;23
Chad
Not the choir. But like the singing team.

01;39;32;11 – 01;39;33;24
Chad
On this megachurch, like.

01;39;34;08 – 01;39;47;01
Chad
This is all right. This is a whole nother deal. You know, there was 20 people in the seats or the pews when we were deployed. And now all of a sudden there’s, you know, 1000. I don’t know about this.

01;39;47;10 – 01;39;47;13
Jon
You know.

01;39;48;08 – 01;39;50;28
Chad
I kind of hate like are. I don’t know about this.

01;39;50;29 – 01;39;52;18
Chad
I’m getting this urge.

01;39;52;18 – 01;40;06;07
Chad
To like go and get up on this stage and sing. I’m not a singer. I mean, come on. You know, but I’m getting this urge, and I have to kind of follow the surge. And it’s it’s just creating this.

01;40;06;07 – 01;40;09;05
Chad
Very weird strengthening.

01;40;09;05 – 01;40;23;19
Chad
Relationship with me in the Lord. And it’s I’m just feeling it, and I’m just kind of following this feeling as I go off on the side. And what’s weird is it tying back to the kids? The kids are seeing this, you know, the kids are seeing.

01;40;23;19 – 01;40;24;11
Chad
The pressure.

01;40;24;20 – 01;40;35;09
Chad
That I’m putting on and on Sunday mornings, you know, and and we need to be at church 15 minutes early. It’s dad’s pro-market bracket of provocative product.

01;40;35;09 – 01;40;36;12
Jon
Whatever Froggatt view.

01;40;36;28 – 01;40;38;18
Chad
That I need to be at.

01;40;38;18 – 01;40;39;05
Chad
Church.

01;40;39;12 – 01;40;41;16
Chad
On Sunday. No ifs, ands or buts.

01;40;41;25 – 01;40;42;07
Jon
You know?

01;40;42;22 – 01;40;43;21
Chad
And they’re seeing.

01;40;43;21 – 01;41;00;24
Chad
That and growing up. And it’s not only strengthening my relationship with the Lord and watching that and the building blocks for them, but it’s it’s strengthening their relationship, watching the need for me to be at church. And that relationship is so important.

01;41;01;02 – 01;41;15;11
Chad
And going back to the whole religion aspect, there’s a big difference between that religion and kind of falling in line and saying what you have to say and doing what you have to do on Sundays and then building and strengthening an actual relationship with the Lord.

01;41;15;29 – 01;41;17;03
Jon
Mm hmm. You know.

01;41;17;18 – 01;41;19;12
Speaker 5
And and yeah.

01;41;19;29 – 01;41;35;17
Jon
There is in. We’ve been talking lot, so I don’t want to unpack all of that, but I do think at least not right now, that could be another conversation. I do think that like looking at, you know, the desire to sing and stuff, hope is contagious.

01;41;36;01 – 01;41;55;08
Jon
And faith is contagious because. There’s a freedom in it, right? There’s a freedom in doing something in faith, and if it fails learning and growing from it, and if it succeeds learning and growing from it. And it’s just like this really beautiful thing because it gives you the freedom to save regardless of the outcome.

01;41;55;08 – 01;42;17;10
Jon
I’m going to give it my all and I’m going to improve from it. And with with that right, whatever the source of that is, becomes contagious, you know, it becomes really contagious for me. Recently, I’ve become and I’ve been, I’m in a new opportunity to really just speak the truth, just like just generally, you know, like nothing

01;42;17;10 – 01;42;22;26
Jon
specific. It could be. I mean, a lot of conversations with a lot of people every day.

01;42;22;26 – 01;42;23;04
Speaker 5
Now.

01;42;23;12 – 01;42;38;10
Jon
With her life has changed. And I have this comfort that I’d never experienced before Roger’s bag, you know, ask a question or say something like that doesn’t seem true. What I’m really getting the sense of is that you’re allowing that to be an excuse to behave this way.

01;42;38;22 – 01;42;53;07
Jon
Right? And in reality, it’s hurting our leadership team because of this, this this. And though it’s admirable, you care. This is wrong. It’s not going. It’s not sustainable. What do you think about that writes like those types of conversations, just those accountability conversations on the K?

01;42;53;12 – 01;43;05;24
Jon
Why was I in this meeting with you not having a clue what it is about and with this person, why is that person I didn’t hear? You know, like just all those types of real world stuff that’s happening, nothing like kind of stepping away.

01;43;05;27 – 01;43;21;27
Jon
I just have this confidence just calling things as they are not bluntly, not really, but with the intent of moving towards a better solution, a more true in our work environment for the organization I’m with. And I was thinking about this last night.

01;43;22;10 – 01;43;22;24
Speaker 5
And this morning.

01;43;22;24 – 01;43;35;18
Jon
It’s like, where the heck did that courage come from? Because, you know, I’ve never had a problem like upholding standards and stuff, but like just point blank to like my boss being like, Hey, you know, honestly, I know we say this, but I think that’s false.

01;43;36;04 – 01;43;46;26
Jon
I don’t think that’s true of us at all. Right. And I think we need to be aware of that and either address it or change what we’re saying. By the way, nice to meet you because this is our third conversation together.

01;43;46;28 – 01;43;57;03
Jon
You know, like like, where does that come from? And what I realized in part, I think it was developed on the show and some of the decisions and conversations I’ve had over the last few months and how that’s evolved.

01;43;57;18 – 01;44;14;27
Jon
But but for me, that was my fate, that was me building that faith and that relationship for myself and the strengthening of the more of myself that I give in the direction I feel I’m supposed to go, the more courage and joy I have and undergoing to work that stressed me before.

01;44;15;17 – 01;44;26;26
Jon
So it’s kind of this cool thing, and I was having a conversation with a buddy. And like I said, like philosophically, we’re we’re on the same page. I think we’re talking about the same truths. I claim them through faith he claims them through.

01;44;27;10 – 01;44;39;12
Jon
He doesn’t have faith in anything to include that. There’s nothing because he’s like, There’s a lot of faith to believe. There’s not the God, right? But I think he’s just he’s where he is, and I don’t have any desire to convince him of anything like that.

01;44;39;15 – 01;44;53;07
Jon
That’s what’s so interesting. I was like, I don’t think he’s wrong. I think he’s perfectly right because. And where he is right now, but I also to I also remembered being there myself, you know, going on this thing and and that’s where it’s like, there’s no moral.

01;44;54;08 – 01;45;10;14
Jon
I don’t feel any superiority or moral like justification in what I do. I’m just freaking grateful and I don’t want to waste the shot and I hope to. I do hope that that is attractive and will inspire others to find what I found.

01;45;11;13 – 01;45;25;24
Jon
But I do want people to find it. I will share it if asked, but I don’t have the desire, the pressure to like. Try to push my views on people, and that has been cool, because now I have this amazing relationship with this guy who’s frickin brilliant, who pushes me.

01;45;25;24 – 01;45;41;23
Jon
He’s a worthy rival. He’s a great partner. And if I didn’t have that distinction, we probably wouldn’t be where we are because I pushed him away in the trying to push and make do something for myself, and I don’t have the desire.

01;45;42;16 – 01;45;57;27
Jon
So it’s like, it’s just this interesting thing because. I think he would say, and I’m sure we’ll have this conversation at some point, but I think he would say that he’s stronger than me because he doesn’t. You have to quote crush of faith or religion or whatever.

01;45;59;25 – 01;46;21;09
Jon
And I’ve been thinking about this and it’s like, you know? Maybe, maybe right now you are stronger than me because you don’t you’re walking by yourself. Right? And that does take a hardness. But. My faith compels me to such a level of strength that so much beyond what I know I’m capable of.

01;46;22;06 – 01;46;29;14
Jon
That even though you may be stronger than me, you’re not stronger than what I’m capable of doing. And there’s a difference, you know? And that’s what’s being.

01;46;29;14 – 01;46;29;29
Speaker 5
Lost.

01;46;30;10 – 01;46;38;04
Jon
Is, yeah, you are stronger than me as an individual, I’m sure you know you’re walking through that dark shadow like you’re walking alone right now. So I get that. But I like.

01;46;39;02 – 01;46;39;08
Speaker 5
And.

01;46;39;17 – 01;46;40;16
Jon
I think sloppy.

01;46;40;22 – 01;46;42;28
Chad
But I think that gauge of.

01;46;42;28 – 01;46;44;07
Chad
Strength is very.

01;46;44;07 – 01;46;45;10
Chad
Multidimensional.

01;46;45;17 – 01;46;46;00
Jon
Yeah.

01;46;46;11 – 01;46;50;22
Chad
Right. So what? You gauge him on in strength and he gauges you on.

01;46;50;22 – 01;46;51;26
Chad
His strength or vice versa?

01;46;52;14 – 01;46;53;06
Chad
That is.

01;46;53;24 – 01;46;54;12
Chad
It’s very.

01;46;54;12 – 01;46;56;07
Chad
Multidimensional. And yeah.

01;46;56;22 – 01;46;58;13
Chad
It’s it’s hard to gauge.

01;46;59;27 – 01;47;09;28
Jon
Yeah, because the way I see it is like, I have another friend who kind of, you know, in the same line of thinking, he’s a Yeah, I don’t need any of those crutches, and I’m like, I think you mistake the word.

01;47;09;28 – 01;47;10;24
Chad
Capitalist for.

01;47;10;24 – 01;47;24;20
Jon
Crutch, right? Like, I think you’ve meant to say catalyst, like because I don’t see this as a crutch. I see it as a catalyst that pushes me to go for so much further beyond anything I would have ever done otherwise that I’m really sandbagging without it.

01;47;24;26 – 01;47;30;22
Jon
Right. I’m really allowing myself the excuse of less because of the fear of what could be. That’s my personal.

01;47;30;22 – 01;47;31;12
Speaker 5
Perspective.

01;47;31;21 – 01;47;50;26
Jon
You know, to kind of what you’re saying. But but it’s interesting because I will tell you with the freedom of not feeling the need to force or convince people of anything. And of choosing just upon the threat of speaking the truth or at least shutting my mouth if I’m not going to speak the truth, it’s been really

01;47;50;26 – 01;48;01;09
Jon
fun and encouraging kind of along the same lines. I I attribute that directly to like, you’re feeling too. I need to go and sing, which I’d love to see. By the way, that’s been. I got.

01;48;01;09 – 01;48;01;21
Chad
A video.

01;48;02;23 – 01;48;07;23
Jon
Good. So I get to see Emmet unfortunately hurt his arm, but he’s doing it now and I get to see sing.

01;48;08;10 – 01;48;09;26
Chad
So, oh, it’s so good.

01;48;09;27 – 01;48;10;16
Jon
Just wait.

01;48;11;23 – 01;48;13;09
Chad
A I’m telling it the.

01;48;13;09 – 01;48;13;23
Chad
Lord.

01;48;13;23 – 01;48;16;09
Chad
And this is the other thing. And kind of gauging.

01;48;16;09 – 01;48;17;13
Chad
Strength right is.

01;48;17;13 – 01;48;17;27
Chad
As you.

01;48;17;27 – 01;48;18;23
Chad
Have your ups and.

01;48;18;23 – 01;48;19;05
Chad
Downs.

01;48;19;16 – 01;48;23;21
Chad
Your peaks near valleys. Everyone up here is doing great.

01;48;24;03 – 01;48;38;07
Chad
Right? But when it gets down here, it’s all of a sudden, Hey, I I, I don’t have to try to sell you on the fact that I have this relationship, right? But yeah, I have something to lean on, right?

01;48;38;13 – 01;48;44;12
Chad
I have a foundation to lean on when I’m down here, right? And I’ve been down.

01;48;44;12 – 01;48;44;28
Chad
Here and I’ve.

01;48;44;28 – 01;48;45;29
Chad
Been down in the.

01;48;45;29 – 01;48;47;10
Chad
Bottom of the pickle barrel.

01;48;47;28 – 01;48;50;07
Chad
When when the odds are not in my.

01;48;50;07 – 01;48;50;24
Chad
Favor.

But being able to lean on something is extremely important, and Ben has been a blessing in my life, right? And if you can just be that light in the darkness, in the darkness, right? Obviously, yeah, just being that shining light.

01;49;08;06 – 01;49;08;28
Chad
Is extremely.

01;49;08;28 – 01;49;12;27
Chad
Important. I don’t need to sell you on it. It’s done wonders for me.

01;49;13;08 – 01;49;24;07
Jon
I’m just going to be hope filled in. Joy filled, right? Because, yeah, I’m glad you said like the peaks and valleys, because like at this point and the reason I don’t feel like it’s a crutch but a catalyst is over time.

01;49;24;15 – 01;49;40;23
Jon
I now am content in fighting and living in the valleys. Right? Like, I’m like, OK, I’m awake, I’m alert, I’m going, and it’s made me open the valleys when everything’s sucking, you know, injury and life circumstances and job loss and everything is piling up.

01;49;40;23 – 01;49;51;29
Jon
It’s like, all right. It’s go time. We’re good. You know, like, this will pass. We’ll get through it. We just have to you, and maybe we won’t. Maybe we die. But that’s the worst that can happen. And let’s go.

01;49;52;07 – 01;50;06;12
Jon
So it’s like, you’re right, it changes. Everyone is happy and the peaks, but it changes the contentment and the drive and motivation and the valleys from a place of being like in despair and stress to contentment and drive.

01;50;06;23 – 01;50;26;12
Jon
And I think that’s the gift that’s lost out on without it, you know? Yeah. I’m going to walk through fire like I’m going to walk through very difficult things contentedly and with a lot of drive where you’re going to be stressed and freaking out, you know, or people have the, you know, proclivity to be.

01;50;26;24 – 01;50;37;03
Jon
So it’s fun, though, because and it’s fun because you get to play these different ideas like you and I get to talk like this and then I get to have the other side of the coin in the conversation with other people.

01;50;37;17 – 01;50;37;21
Speaker 5
Who.

01;50;37;21 – 01;50;54;02
Jon
Don’t share the same faith. And it’s nice because that’s the other thing. I think people want to stay where they’re comfortable and talk with those who think the same way completely. And there’s just so much lost when we do that and we forget that we’re all human beings who just want to be treated well.

01;50;54;15 – 01;50;54;29
Speaker 5
You know.

01;50;55;22 – 01;50;57;19
Jon
And just kind of comes back to that. So.

01;50;58;26 – 01;51;02;06
Chad
But at the end of the day, coming outside of your comfort zone.

01;51;02;13 – 01;51;03;24
Chad
Is where the true growth is going.

01;51;03;24 – 01;51;04;17
Chad
To take place.

01;51;04;21 – 01;51;06;25
Chad
You know, across the board with everything.

01;51;08;01 – 01;51;10;14
Chad
So get used to feeling uncomfortable.
